Anyone else read that article about putting Nitto 315/35/ZR17 drag radials on those 17x10 Pony R's? They get'em in there without mini tubbing and they look sick as hell. I've been thinking about getting Pony R's and this really sways my decision a lot because they're one of the only rims out there with the right offset to run a 17x10 and keep it in the wheel well.

They are a tad narrower than the typical 315, but either way it's the widest tire i've ever seen without mini tubs. You'd still be able to run at least a 275 BFG drag radial back there the same way.

Yeah i've seen it, i just wonder how much bigger the overall diameter is compared to a typical slick or ET street. I'm not a big fan of 18s myself, i like to have some sidewall on my tires. To be honest i'd probably even get 16x10.

My friend runs 17x9s with 315 Nittos on his 88 LX hatch...

The thing that i really like is the offset/backspacing of those rims. They fit in the wheel well so nice and they actually have a slight deep dish to them which i've always said would make Ponys look even better.

I dunno. I have Ponys on my car right now and they don't look too bad. They really don't match my car though so i don't think i'd buy Ponys, even the R's. I think they would suit an '87+ much better than mine.

Its not hard to do....i'm running 17x10.5 deep dish bullits with sumitomo 315's out back on my coupe. But i'm not running the quad shocks or tailpipes either tho. Tires sit inside the lip, not using any spacers either.

Are you sure your buddy is running a 315 on 17x9's? Nitto recommends running a 275 on 9"-11" rim and for the 315's a 10.5"-12". The only reason I'm asking is that I would love to run a 315 on my 17x9's and I also having trouble thinking that it is possible to squeeze that size tire on that size rim.

Yup, I'm positive...

I am having a tough time finding his pics, but it's the red LX in the middle of this one with 17x9 03 Cobra's.

Hey 25thmustang,

I noticed your buddy doesn't have any tailpipes. Is he able to run tailpipes with that size tire?

He also has an Edelbrock Performer RPM II intake. I've heard there can be some hood clearance issues with this intake. Is he utilizing a phelonic spacer? If so, what size? Does he have any hood clearance issues?
The reason I'm asking about the intake is becuase I have one sitting in my garage waiting for me to get a new tb before I install it.

FWIW, the car in the article i mentioned didn't/couldn't run tail pipes either (possibly custom tail pipes but probably none of the "factory replacement" pipes). A friend of mine who had a mini tubbed rear end make a pretty cool under-axle setup that was a lot like the IRS Cobra tail pipes..it was pretty cool, might be an option.
