I had a local hot rod builder/custom painter look at my little project '93 to see what he'd charge me for a "decent" paint job. Don't need a show winner, but want to be proud of her. He said he would use a single stage urethane and would charge me a grand. I've only had one experience with SSU and it wasn't for long enough to know if it lasts. What do you all think of the price? The body has about 15 minor hail dents and about 3 places on the body that he'd have to do some body work/filler. I'm tikering with the idea of doing the whole thing myself, if for no other reason than I've always wanted to paint a car. I'm the type to read, study, learn before I tackle something like this. Thoughts?

Thanks!:nice:

Not a bad price if you trust his work. You can sink several hundred just for paint and all the mixins, not to mention tools, spray gun etc that you need to do it yourself. Maybe you can help him, then you'll be part of the project, learn the process, be able to spend the extra time to take car of the small details, and still end up with a good looking car for a good price.

Thats cheap as dirt. We just spent 2000+ just for a paint materials on the T Bird I have restored at my shop.

You did read the part where I'm talking about a 93 four banger right? But I guess it's cool to say you spent that much.........

I've thought about asking him if I can help, just to learn, but I was afraid that I'd come off sounding like I didn't trust his work or that I was being ridiculously cheap.

Surprisingly that happens a lot at my shop and like normal we kindly decline. To be honest, someone who doesn't know what they are doing is just going to slow the whole process down. Since that guy is already giving you a very low price to start with, he'll probably be going as fast as he can. So, if I were you I would probably just let him do his thing.

Yeh like the guy above said...Having someone work on the car and learning will slow the process down like 4x at least. Id decline to...even sometimes having somone help who knows what there doing bugs me...ie at work I was cutting in/prepping a core support and had a journey man painter "tag teaming" the job...because he had flash time...well he got in my way and slowed me down and did it way diff then Id like...and had to redo all his "help"

But yeh a $1000 sounds pretty cheap for what you described. I personally wouldnt do single stage unless its goin a solid color and not black. My problem with single stage black is it fades out too fast. I had a black single stage car and it lasted 2 1/2 years...If your goin a light solid color on single stage it should be ok...

Im working on a few project cars...my Honda is goin BC/CC because its black with pearl...but my 66 stang will probably end up being Single Stage Wimbelton White and should be ok for a while.

If you have any questions on paint Ill gladly answer them and help guide ya with the best choice for the money you have to spend.

Urethane paint is what I used on my 81 notchback. Search Project 81 Hack Job, or just "Hack Job" There are a ton of threads with pics. That stuff dries up hard as a rock and resists stone chips better than bc/cc.

It's all in the prep that makes it last. Half the Maaco jobs out there wouldn't be too bad if they just prepped the car half decent.

Just look at that Rustoleum roll on paint job that's been posted on here before...it all depends on the work that's put in.

I'm not saying we spent that much to be cool at all dude. Plus, I personally didn't spend that much, its a car I did for a customer. I was just saying that paint is expensive for quality stuff thats gonna last.

So the fact that its a 93 4-banger Mustang instead of a classic thunderbird means they give you a discount on the materials? Not sure why you somehow took offense to his comment, a grand for a urethane job on any car is cheap...unless of course you dont mind having your lights, trim, windows and wheels all the same color, I'd hook you up with that job for a grand any time you wanted.
