I cannot believe what I just did.

Well, I made a bottle heater today for $20.

My thought was this: It became very apparent that a heater is needed if it isn't hot outside. I don't have the money or desire to spend $150+ on a heater, wiring it up, mounting a switch, whatnot IF it's not needed to do so.

So; I got to thinking and came up with this: Power inverter, small, cheap, plugs into a cigarette lighter and allows you to plug a standard wall outlet into it. Great. So I take a trip to Walmart, see a 100w Black and Decker power inverter for $20.

Got home, grabbed a standard heating pad, (the kind you would use for back aches) checked for wattage (it was rated at 50w, excellent), and the rest is history. It probably won't work AS fast as a bottle heater, but the point is, it does work, and it was dirt cheap to do. All I have to do is plug the inverter in (which is NOT big or bulky) to the center console outlet, and whalah... set it from low to high in the turn of a knob.

So that gets THAT out of the way, and now I just need a window switch and purge. After some debate, I think for now I am going with Summit Racing's window switch, which is only $40. There is no gear lockout or anything, but thinking about it, I can't spray 1st OR 2nd on street tires so it's not really a concern at this point. I have a set of 28" DR's, so with some heat in them, I HOPEFULLY will get the car to stick in 1st on a well prepped track. Then that allows me to buy a purge kit with the difference saved between the Summit and HSW switch. If the Summit switch doesn't work out, I can get the HSW switch later on.

I want nitrous.... my car burns oil and has 120k on the clock. Probabyl a brilliant idea right? :)

That was part of my thought process as well, but I decided to bite the bullet. I bought the car to have fun with it, and I have a DD so if it blows, it can be down and I will still have transportation.

At the time I sprayed, it had 142,xxx miles on it, and uses around a quart of oil between changes. But my compression test came back with the lowest cylinder at 174psi, highest at 181psi.

if you dont wanna get a window switch or WOT switch hook the spray up to a push button. and besides its more fun anyways :nice:

i just bought a hurst shifter and thats what i used for activiation. enjoy the instant torque man. I sure miss it. far less problems than i have had with this kenne bell.:(

and a good bottle heater is the dyno tune nitrous bottle heater. it has a pressure monitor so you set what pressure you want to spray at and it will hold the bottle at that pressure. I mounted my pressure monitor to the bottle so i could leave the heater on all the time so it stays at that pressure so as the bottle gets lower it doesnt take forever to heat up. an also as a precaution too because if that pressure monitor is mounted on the nozzle of the bottle it doesnt monitor the pressure till you open the bottle which then it will continue to heat the bottle because its not getting a pressure reading.

I rather run it off a WOT switch and hook a window switch up to it. Nothing against switches, but my luck I would get my timing wrong when shifting and forget to lift off the button, haha. I do like those shift knobs with the button on them, though.

I have a pressure gauge mounted to the bottle that reads it before the valve is opened, so whatever the bottle is doing the gauge is reading it. I have heard a lot of good things about Dyno Tune's products, but I'm going to see how well my rigged up heater does, lol.

As far as the torque, yeah, it is awesome. I am looking forward to getting the 100 jets in, and MAYBE the 125's... but I think that would exceed my high mile fuel system at the moment. I should probably look into a Focus pump and/or KB BAP. I watched your nitrous run that you posted on YouTube, and hearing how hard it hit was bad ass.

Ouch! $5.50/lb is insane! I would definately only spray at the track if it cost that much here.

Ryan, a Focus SVT fuel pump is a good idea. Its an easy install and you can get them pretty cheap on eBay. I got mine off this site from Ben(SaleenGT2001) a couple years ago.

Yeah they seem pretty reasonable and flow as well as I'll probably ever need.

It's funny, because as soon as everything comes together, you start to find stuff that "needs" to be done, and the nickle and diming starts to occur...:rlaugh:

Do you know where a link for a write up is or can you PM me some instructions? I've looked all over for some instructions and can't seem to find any.

There used to be a write-up but the webpage isn't up anymore. It really is a pretty easy job. Make sure you run the gas down in your tank as low as you can get it. It will make dropping the tank alot easier, lighter.

Basically this is what you have to do...

Put a floorjack under the gas tank, unbolt the gas tank(don't forget the 3 bolts for the filler neck by the gas cap), unplug all the wiring going into the basket, take the basket out, remove the stock pump(be careful not to lose any of the screws, they are really small), the focus pump will bolt right in, reinstall the basket, plug everything back in and bolt the tank back up. I would recommend you replace the filler neck grommet at this time also. It will eventually dry up and tear so now is a good time to put a new one on.

What kit?

Focus fuel pump.

Thanks man. I replaced that grommet a few months back, so I already know how to drop the tank. Seems like I just have to unbolt the old pump and bolt in the new one. Doesn't sound bad at all. :nice:

ya those were the days

I have had more problems with this kenne bell than I ever did spraying. Nitrous gets a bad rep because of people being done but in all honesty its more reliable than a blower! never had to worry about chucking belts back then. and had a fun car on motor then when i wanted more i had it at the push of a button. enjoy the spray! its the most fun you can have in a car with your clothes on :nice:

Well I took my buddy for a ride tonight and couldn't get the bottle PSI up, even with my awesome rigged not-so-great bottle heater. It may work after a while, but it's no good at heating a bottle in under 20mins. Fudge.

Bad news: Did a 2-3rd pull anyway because you can still feel it kick even on lower PSI... now it feels like the clutch is slipping once I hit 3rd and it stops spinning. I'm not surprised... to my knowledge it's a stock 142,xxx clutch.

Haha, well I'm glad it was reliable for you. Look at the upside though, you don't have to fill any bottles anymore and you have power on tap from idle all the way to the limiter. And if you miss a shift, you don't have to worry about your **** blowing up...:rlaugh:

hahahah very true. i was actually pretty quick on the button lol and was worried my first time of forgetting to let off when i shift lol but never had a problem with that. get a second 10lb bottle and that will help with keeping the pressure up down track. the one problem with nitrous is the longer your spraying pressure drops off and you arent getting the same hit so a second 10lb bottle running into the same line will help that or just get a single 20 but dual bottles just look sick!:nice:

I would sell ya my dyno tune nitrous heater for cheap if i wasnt gonna run nitrous again once i get the built motor lol. many people have offered to buy the kit off me but i have to turn them down cause i miss the juice big time :(

Yeah it would be nice to have a second bottle. I have seen a lot of people selling them pretty decently, but I need a window switch, purge, and possibly a real bottle heater before I consider a second bottle. But I agree, there is something incredibly menacing about dual bottles, lol.

I appreciate the thought of the offer for your heater, lol. That is going to be a sick setup you will have.

If you want to heat a bottle up quick, without a torch ;-), run about 4-5" of warm/hot water in your bathtub or sink and set the bottle in the water. Keep an eye on the gauge because it can heat up very quickly depending on how hot you get the water.:nice:
