Need junk 5.0 intake manifold

Bah. That's kids stuff. You've already proved your very dangerous with a mig welder. Get some piping and build yourself a hotside!

I've done it several times before. Of all of the turbo projects I've had, everyone has been custom fabricated.

My question is this: (Keep personal bias's on the back burner)

Every other month you read where some mag has taken a 70-76mm Chinese turbo, that cost $400-500.00 and made butt loads of power (592 FWHP) on stock JY applications. http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/hrdp_1105_592hp_46l_2v_motor_for_2298/viewall.html

Stock induction, stock internals, stock heads, blah-blah-blah.

If I was to consider something like this I'd start w/ one (or two) of these turbos. I wouldn't try and make anymore power than the stock internals would safely accomodate. I'd have to look long and hard at whether I'd just run E85 w/ no intercooler, or use Premium gas, and water/meth injection to intercool it. I can get the blow through carb built for either fuel.
AND
Will one of these things last for any length of time?

The article goes on to compare a turbo like the one you have against the Chinee one tested, It ran hotter, and made less power at the same boost levels. If I understand, and compensate for it, ?????

From a HP/dollar standpoint, yes, a Chinese turbo beats the pants off any Precision, Comp, Borg Warner, Turbonetics, etc. unit. Based on that article, 46 HP definitely isn't worth a $2,000 price difference between the two turbos (for street car). There a are a lot of the no-name turbos being sold and traded on the classifieds over on the Corral, and their turbo section of the forums has a lot of satisifed On3 customers. I haven't seen any threads on turbo failures. Actually, the only turbo failure thread I saw was a billet Precision unit where the compressor wheel literally exploded itself to pieces. If you're not building a race car, save the cash and buy yourself a cheap(er) turbo.

Now, from a personal (and biased) standpoint, I'd never buy a Chinese turbo. To me, there are too many chances that something may happen, and with my luck, it will happen to me. They don't go through the QC that the more expensive turbos do. I also have a complex where I need to have the best parts available on my car (most of the time, anyway). I guess it's a "do it right the first time" type of mentality. I'll sleep better at night knowing that I have a good turbo on the car from a good (US) company. Although a used journal bearing Precision unit would have been plenty for me. I was lured into the luster of the shiny billet wheel and water-cooled triple ball bearing housing from Comp. Ooo la la!

Personally, if I see an awesome car with a Chinese turbo, the car becomes a little less awsome to me. But that's just me. In contrast, I'm all for a cheap turbo on a budget build that is going to get the piss beat out of it. To each his own...

while my vote would be for a turbo setup, I think that an old school blower would look awesome and keep with the old school theme. If for some reason you need another intake, I still have the summit knock off of the victor jr that I modified for injectors. Water/meth would also be my vote over E85. You can buy the yellow bottles of Heat (which is methanol) at any auto parts stores or walmart in a pinch.

JUST SOME NUMBERS....

A S400 series BW turbo can be had for under $700, they tend to be a little more then a MP turbo but are very durable and putting up crazy numbers. A 70mm p trim turbonetics will cost about $950....

Im a big fan of running a high quality wastegate and blowoff...a TiAL 38mm wastegate will coat $250, a RPS/JGS 50mm blowoff is $100, cheap CX Racing a/a $190. I prefer a single turbo for simplicty sake. Then you could make your current manifolds or headers into turbo style and fab the pipes.

Although I like the ambition and intent with the 671...would ne cool as hell. How far will that stick out the hood? 12"?

I like the meth idea...Im close with a dealer, ME... :D

Actually, If I mill the existing Edelbrock manifold down to just break into the tops of the runners,....AND if I can get a 1/2" piece of alum plate completely tigged onto those runners as a base/mating surface for the blower, that'll put the bottom of the blower just above the top of the alt. From that line, to the top of the existing air cleaner measures 7". (which coincidentally is the same dimension for a 6-71 case height) the carb measures about 4" from base to top, and a 2 hole "ShotGun" blower hat probably about another 6-8".

(has to be a 2 hole "Shotgun", because no self respecting fabricator would settle for one of those gay, 3 hole, used up, "bug catcher" looking air cleaners that have been sticking through the hood of every tunnel rammed,or blown Camaro since the early 90's)

That said, while the blower itself would be under, the rest of that mess would indeed stick out of the hood right at 10-12".

But that is what is mod is about right? When was the last time you saw a carbureted 6-71 setup that wasn't scraping the bottoms off of the clouds?

REALITY CHECK:

While I agree, an old roots style 6-71 blower would be cool, And nothing sounds like a 3" belt driven huffer. I doubt that I wanna trade my drive-a-bility for that excess. That coupled to the fact that a blower, associated 3" Gilmer drive, two carbs, and my shotgun hat all add up to about 3 grand. Probably adds about 100+ lbs straight on top of the engine as well.:nono:

Naww, think I'm gonna let that idea die.

I've been driving this thing alot now, and I'm just now putting my foot in it. Maybe I'm getting old, but to me, now that I've added the heads and cams, it feels fast. Fast as my LS 2 GTO, was (and I thought it felt great), this thing feels as fast or faster. And I get to stick junk gas in it.

The reason for the junk intake stands. No additional power adder for me.

I just wanna complete my old school theme under the hood w/ either (2) 4's, or (3) two barrel carbs.
If I really go off the deep end, I'll get back on my Weber scheme. ( Then it'll be (4) 2's)

The rest of you can buy up all of the 93 octane premium gas.

I'll bite... only cuz I had to Google it, and only came up with some Orthodontist in Nebraska.

Mike, Who in the World is Chucky Fuller?!?!

I thought you'd never ask.

So far I like everything except the gauges and the scoop. I have never been a fan of digital gauges, thats just how I roll. You might be able to find a hood scoop off of an 82'. They're wide enough to let the Air cleaner poke up through the hood a little and short enough to avoid looking like a Bread Box. The interior is awesome!
:flag:

Then I said back:

Right now the gauges are what they are. I agree they conflict w/ the theme. The whole fox dash conflicts w/ the theme. Future plans are for a 67/68 dash and console If I can get it to hide the existing A/C Evap unit and heater. I know that a 69 dash is too wide and way too expensive, so it will be a earlier version more than likely.

Then mustang mutt said:
I think the dimensions of the car look great as far as how the lines flow. It looks tough as hell. Kinda like a 68' California Specials' chubby bad ass little brother.
And I summed it up:

Yeah I like the analogy. There was a little bad-ass in the first grade that I ended up beating up. Had only 4 toes on one of his feet. Still remember his name... Chucky Fuller. Monkey Fightin' 4 toed, Chucky Monday to Friday Fuller!

I think THAT will be the official nick-name for the car in honor of the original, first bad ass I ever encountered.
