Valve covers are stripped. They're gonna stay bare for now, but will get coated soon.

Not sure yet what the powder coating scheme is going to be, but the ideas he's bounced off of me have all been very cool!

Uhhhhmmm. Wertderferk? On a scale from 1 to don't be a dumbass, how bad do I need this dust shield?
If it's really do or die why not trim the shield. Then use trim the just the holes out of the shield and use them as the spacer / shim

That won't work. The "sheild" is not a shield. It is an index plate. It locates the starter so the teeth have the proper engagement... Kinda like the shimming a sbc starter, only this is better, because it works right. Every time. You do have to use the right plate for the application, or your starter will devour itself and the ring gear on your flywheel. Sorry Collin.

Edit: I'll bet that plate is for the larger 164 tooth flywheel, which pulls the starter outward. You need a sbf 157 tooth i think.

^this..wrong engine plate

No, the paint is fine, it's just covered in glue. A few months ago, I had the car stored outside. I have a roll of this white plastic film they put on new cars to ship, so I covered the car in that stuff to protect it from all the sap and stuff that would fall out of the oak tree above it. The joke was on me as the glue came off the wrap and stuck to the car.

I guess the rest of the week I am just going to keep hooking stuff up as best I can. I'm almost to the part of the project where you make 20 different trips to the hardware store for random pipes, tubes, and fittings. Fun, right?

Well the whole bottom is missing which to me, defeats the purpose of the shield. Oh well, I got bigger issues now.

The engine/trans is in the car.

So then,..I'm guessing that you just "ommited" the index plate altogether then? I see the starter was bolted in place.

You may be alright. Then again,...you may not. As stated, the plates purpose is two fold,...it acts as a shim to create some clearance between the pilot bearing input on the crank, but mostly serves to precisely locate the starter. W/O the plate, just bolting the starter to the two holes allows for some movement between the top and bottom holes.

I tried to think back to a time where I ever went w/o it.

Couldn't cite a single time.

In my current engine, I have the exact opposite situation that you have,..I have a 157t plate and a 164t flywheel. I cut, and sectioned the thing to allow the starter hole to be relocated accordingly.

For the sake of finishing up the engine, yes. I don't want to leave it blown apart any longer than I have to on the garage floor while I track one down. I still don't have a clutch, so it's all gotta come back apart anyhow. I just needed to get the engine sitting how it should as opposed to guessing at sh*t. I'm slowly learning the "do it right the first time" method. Actually, I'm just tired of my usual SOP biting me in the ass.

Been there done that . Got tired of getting bit in the ass . Gets expensive . Easier to spend it once then 3 times.
