Build Thread The Hoopty Chronicles - New House, New garage, New Car?

Well, in that post, no. I am uncertain of what the savings are if I built it myself. There are a few guys locally that have offered to help. But what do you think the savings are? Enough to justify staying the course?
That depends,.......will you blame me if you get cold feet?

Like I said,...PATC is where I bought everything (Alto red clutches, Kevlar bands, Vasco intermediate shaft and a 10L/U converter from them rated to be locked up 2800RPM (Where I wanted it to be, should be the start of my torque peak, where the engine should be making around 600 RWTQ) Being a 351, your's will be a little higher than that but they'll accommodate.

All of that stuff came in one box for right around 1000. IIRC.

Add 200 for a shifter.

Add 550 for the controller ( if you intend to keep it all electronic)

My Plate cooler in front of the monster was 100.00 (ebay)
And if you pay 250.00 for a flex plate and that separator because its an S.F.I. flex plate,...that's your business,...Mine was stock 89 bucks,....and I just sectioned the 157t starter hole over an inch and made the old plate work.
Steel 3/8 brake line (too cheap to even list)

I'm seeing 1950.00......but what can I say,...I'm industrious, I fabricate things that I can. When I can't do that, I shop. I adapt. I make things work that might be for something else. It's what hot rodding is all about.

But I obscure the facts, and throw a veil over everything else, so discount everything I say.

#60. " TrackDominator " Fits AODE / 4R70W transmissions. This is a 10 inch lock-up converter rated at 1000 horse power. It has an extra wide carbon fiber clutch and can be ordered in stall speeds of 2000 to 5000 RPM. Fits both torque converter bolt patterns. Cost $669.00

*** And they discount this when you buy all of the other sht from them,......all you gotta do is ask for it.

I was just browsing their site. They sell a complete unit WITH the converter for $2800, which is a hell of a deal.

I could definitely do that.
So, in retrospect,..you've got similar playing fields now. Either a 5 speed TKO, or a 4 speed 4R70, both w/i about 400 dollars of each other.

Now,...given that scenario,..

You stand on it. Tires light,.( lift) yank stick reapply throttle, boost comes back ( lift) push stick, reapply throttle, boost again (lift), yank stick,. cars all over the place, and you gotta steer, yank and stuff that lever, just hoping that you won't be fodder for some future You Tube fail compilation...

or.....

You stand on it. Tires light, boost comes on full, click, boost is still here, OMG it's still coming on! click...WTF!! I'm going 100 MPH!!! lift,.. slow down,........push button, 4th gear,.... stop shaking,.....engage OD,.....take a sip of Pepsi,...listen to music,...enjoy life at 60 MPH.

Auto:
- PATC Built 4R/TC - $2800
- Cooler/lines - $60
- Shifter/cable - $100
- Flexplate/dust shield - $50

Total:
$3010

And by comparison, if I went with a TKO 600

- Trans - $2400
- Clutch - $339
- Flywheel - $239
- already have a bellhousing

Total:
$2978

@madmike1157 I whittled it down and they're dead even now. May be less if PATC would take my used one as a core and then apply the discount you mentioned.

Don't forget the shipping cost on that core.

Have you considered giving silverfox a call? He may or may not be in that price range, and may be able to stuff those 4r guts in an aod case so you can skip a trans controller without having to go full manual vb.

Well for fear of my life, I'm not going to say what in particular I just agreed to buy, but it was too good of a deal to pass up.

I got a core for $100 from one buddy.
I also scored a 3500 stall Neil Chance converter, billet input shaft, drum, and a shifter from another buddy for $600.

I'd estimate another $1k in parts and labor and we will have a 1k hp capable setup. Only a slight trade off. ;)
