Early thoughts for me are to use a thin plastic sheeting and jute for its flexibility.

While that is interesting Chris, I'm thinking, at the moment, of how to do the jute padding like the original. I wonder if i could make a form from plywood that would have a cut out section of the non compressed area and use it to apply pressure to some fresh jute that i infuse with glue. If i let the glue harden up while maintaining an even pressure on my form (buck?) would i be able to almost duplicate the factory piece?

BTW, i see how your suggestion could make an outstanding wheel cover and i'll keep it in mind. Someday i'll get to that issue.

I think this will make a better piece than OEM. Once again, the the foam strip insulation with a sticky side; the stuff you get from the hardware store, makes great padding for the edges. Buy it in the density that tickles your fancy.

My package tray in my 88 has a particle board under it. The tray isn't made like yours and has no clip in the middle. This thing is like a layered cake...carpet, jute, board, and insulation in bottom center.

I'll take some pics and post when I get off work. Mine seems easier to duplicate.

All it would take for me is a roll of sound deadening insulation ( 3/8 thick ), fiber board, and carpet.

I will not spend 124 bucks for one of these things.

A carpet kit for a hatch might come with enough jute backed carpet to do the package tray. ( I gotta research that )

Budgets do that to you. I would have started with a better foundation if I had a funds to do so at the time.

Subsequent rebuilds would get cheaper as consumables were stocked and methods improved. Why, I bet Dave could fix a squeaky side view mirror in minutes by now.

I only had enough money to buy one little Japanese kid.

Remember these from yesterday.

I removed the metal backing strips, cleaned and sanded them.

Then painted them blue, a couple pics from inside and outside. I had to tilt the board to try and get the sparkle in the paint.

Tomorrow i'll need to paint the right 1/4 front moulding. I left it inside the car, duh . Luckily I have two extra door mouldings and will sacrifice one and make it into several shorter mouldings.

Today i also sanded down the steering wheel backer and the interior windshield trim. I sprayed rocker chip guard on the trim. I'll sand it tomorrow and paint it with the left side trim piece and the steering wheel piece. I need to remember to paint the center panel of the steering wheel.

Depending on time, i'm going to try to work on the exterior window trim. I need to sand the lower rear window piece and get it etched and primered.

I don't know if i'll get the window trim painted tomorrow, thursday at the latest. I'll paint the drip rail mouldings at the same time.

Oh yeah! I got my new lower windshield mouldings in from LMR today too. I'll paint them this week too. They'll have the same satin finish as the hood and bumper.

I'm going to go to one of our local auto upholstery supply stores this week and take my package tray with me and see what they offer in materials.

Next payday i'm buying the new driver's floorpan! I'm going to go ahead and buy the crossmember piece as well, maybe the payday after next. I need to buy new seat bolt brackets for that floor pan as well.
