I can't wait to pretend I know what I'm doing when I start body work on the '66.

Speaking of being a novice, what are y'all talking about when you say you are "cutting in" the door jambs?
 
So, here’s my cliff notes thread. Look through there and you’ll see exactly what I did.
I would strip the mirrors down to the plastic. You’ll be surprised on how many coats those will have on them, even from the factory.

I have a completely different way I would repair quarter glass trim than what I’ve seen other guys do. If you guys are interested enough I could go to the salvage yard and buy an old weathered set and show you exactly what I would do.

Then maybe i could give the repaired set away to one of you guys.

The weather is supposed to be nice here this weekend so I am going to try to get some of my trim pieces done. When you are stripping the pieces, what are you using? Does it just need to be sanded and smoothed? I have various grits of sandpaper, a box of red scotch brite pads, a couple sanding blocks, and 0000 steel wool (I usually use that for cleaning bare metal pieces before clearcoating). I also have this sanding wheel that goes on a drill (not too sure how I feel about that one!). I am planning on painting with SEM trim paint. Do I need to primer or just lay the trim paint on? I have a can of SEM high build primer I was going to use for the quarter windows but if you are able to get those windows from the salvage yard I can use the primer for any of these other pieces. I am OCD, but inexperienced with body work, which is not a good combination!

@Davedacarpainter, I've got a couple of questions. I have no paint equipment or experience at all except for repainting an old rusty freezer 20 years ago. I really need to put some ppaint on the cowl of my 90. It's a 7 up car and the hood and front bumper were resprayed some time before I got it. The rest of the car needs compunding, polish, and wax mostly. So what's the best, non-professional way to do this? I can remove the trim and tape everything off, but will a rattle can be good enough?

As for buffing you’re car? There are lots of good products out there. I’ve been using 3M’s Perfect It EX system for years, but it’s not the only product out there.

We had a fairly big hail storm about a month and a half ago. I’ve been nutsoid busy for the past month. I’m really, really tired of painting completes. The old body gets tired:cry:

For anyone looking for help from me and I haven’t answered your question enough before, repost the question. I’ll try not to be such a derelict for now.

I‘m buying a new paint related thing that I want to show.

I’ll be ordering a Dewalt cordless buffer. Time to cut the chord.

I’ve had a dewalt buffet for years, 15-20 maybe. I bought it when I was a prepper/buffer. It’s got a cord but it’s buffed hundreds of cars. Had to replace the brushes in it a few times. Cordless would be nice, I don’t use it too much anymore, just on my personal stuff. Let us know!

Actually, my post with a question is just 3 above yours at 929. Ironically, you asked me if I had a buffer.

Ok, two separate issues to address.

First, your cowl panel. Sometimes it’s tough to make a call from pictures.

I’m not sure if the clear coat has just hazed over the years, or if it’s delaminated and is gone. Take a small amount of rubbing compound and use a very soft rag to polish a small area of the cowl. If the rag comes back with green on it fairly quickly, it’s either a single stage paint job or the clear has come away from the base. Do the small compound test and tell me what happens.

As for the lines from where the stripe was? You’re a little screwed here. A painter masked off at the stripes before and painted the upper area. That’s not tough to fix for me......that said, you would have to repaint the fenders, doors and quarters (if it’s all been painted that way).

Oh, green comes up from the cowl. I know it will need to be painted, I just don't know a budget way how.

Now that you mention the paint, I can see it clear as day, but it's just the front quarters. The hood was reshot at some point, that I know. I found overspray under the headlight lens when I was negotiating the price.

A ”budget way” to paint the cowl, hummmmm.........How close are you to Oklahoma?
