Progress Thread Hoopty v2.0 - It All Snowballed

Ha ha ha!!! If you were apologizing for those two cuss words then don't come to my house when I'm turning wrenches and :poo: isn't going my way.

Glad you got it running and hopefully your ordered some new plugs. Don't forget a little anti seize on the plugs if you are running aluminum heads (could not remember if you were or not).

Went to FL last week for vacation and was itching to get back. Got a shorter belt but am STILL battling belt squeal at the alternator. Im going to put a laser on it this evening if I get time but I highly doubt its an alignment issue.

Other than that, the car starts and runs fine. The idle needs tuning. Which brings me to my beef with megasquirt, or better yet tunerstudio. When you have a car that runs fine for a few years and doesnt need any tweaking, you forget what you knew in tunerstudio. I've always been shaky with it but dammit here we are again having to watch hours of YT to re-educate myself...
If you unplug the IAC, the idle falls to 650-700. So there's definitely not a vacuum leak, its the idiot behind the keyboard not making the right commands.

That's why I "have a guy" for that. Tuning is not my thing, I don't have the patience for things I don't enjoy. You seem to have the right mindset, being you can so carefully craft wood, so I'm sure you'll get it brother.

It Drives!

... That's the good news. Bad news is I have to pull the intake back off. Something is amiss under the intake and is drawing vacuum pretty good into the crank case. My guess is a misaligned intake gasket OR I didnt torque the intake down enough. Ill try and see about it this evening.

Couldnt get the idle dialed in and it smokes on decel so all that points to a gasket misalignment if I were to take a blind guess.

Otherwise, it drives REALLY well. Super smooth, very snappy throttle response. A lot quieter cruising than I expected. Overall I am thrilled.

Just a suggestion so take it with a grain of salt. I looked back on your pictures and noticed you are using bolts on the lower intake. Use studs instead and you will get a better torqued and it helps line gaskets up. Been running them for years and don’t have intake leak issues.

I looked into a set last night, they're $64. Probably money well spent.

I use studs on everything as well it’s a pain in the ass to lift the intake when it needs to come off but the assembly experience is night and day

Also I usually retorque about 3-4 times in sequence before I even start it

Let it sit 15-20 min and it’ll be loose again and re tq

Im really hoping that's all it is. I dont see how the intake gaskets could have slid down.

Lower intake wasn’t tight. Went down to 23 lb/ft. You can see where oil was getting sucked up into the intake and fouling the plugs. These were old plugs anyway.

So, new plugs going in, checking rockers, changing the oil. Hope that’s the last we see of it for a good, long while. Looking forward to a lot of road miles soon.

well I torqued the intake down yesterday, the bolts were not loose but it absolutely wasn't to spec, still heavy vacuum in the vents. Sooo that means I get to tear it all back apart and figure out what the deal is. I know they make some thick 1262 gaskets I may need to track down. I'm hoping its something simple and the intake wasnt milled to some weird angle.

Edit* I have pre-emptively ordered some 1262R-5 gaskets that are .120 thick just in case.
Working from home today and will sneak out as I am able...

Yes sir that will definitely create a leak. You can tack the gaskets down with some 3M weather stripping adhesive. Two small dots (size of a pencil eraser) placed between 1&2 and 3&4. Cleans up with a razor blade and some brake cleaner.
