I'm a rookie here and I'm confused as hell after reading so much about rebuilding my engine. I'm looking for guidance before making a wrong move. My thoughts are to install the crank and pistons from a 03 cobra, 270 cam, long tube headers and rebuild, port and polish the 2v pi heads.

Man that’s a good combo... only problem with that is, before you buy the cobra stuff you need to strip down your block and take it in to measured. The cylinders need to still be with in standard piston spec, or you might have to plus size the pistons. Stock cranks are very strong, so need be just buy used cobra rods and new forged pistons if you have to plus size them.

Are you porting the heads yourself? What’s the hp goal? You need to set goals and I can tell you the easiest way to hit them. I’ve seen many supercharger non forged stock engines hit around early 400hp, stock intake, stock internals, stock headers. If I remember our engines are restricted once we go above 500hp.

Exactly the kind of guidance I need! My goal is 400 hp but I’ll be satisfied (for a while) being close. So I should keep my stock crank and use forged pistons and rods. How likely is it that I’ll need to get plus sized pistons for my stock block?
No way am I attempting to do the heads myself as I want everything about this build to be right.

It all depends on how many miles are on the engine and how well it was taken care of. I’ve had pretty good luck with blocks but it’s a gamble if you don’t get it measured. If the cylinder walls are fine then putting in the cobra pistons and rods would be a great combo, I think it keeps the compression ratio around the same. I would leave the crank alone unless you really want an 8bolt crank, then you gotta match a flywheel and clutch to it as well. Honestly if you just do pistons and rods I would save money and boost it, then add mods later to help improve hp. You can always up boost for more power and still have everything else stock up to 500hp.

If it were me doing it again, I’d source a 4.6 aluminum Ford Explorer long block, cobra pistons and rods, leave everything else alone and boost it. Then work on suspension, and then maybe add more performance once you need more hp.

What is your opinion on eagle rods vs the stock Manley rods?

I’ve never forged an engine before, or used either brand. Some one else is gonna have to chime in it and give their opinion on them

I think with aftermarket cams you will need to get notched pistons so they dont hit the intake/exhaust valves on the piston. Buddy of mine cammed his stock 2001 GT Mustang and had the pistons hit his valves causing him to replace them and get the notched pistons. He used Comp Cams but I dont know if others will do the same?

Depends on what your goal is, and what the rest of your Setup will be such as heads and intake. I’ve heard good things about Comp’s stage 3 xtreme energy cam but it’ll need to be matched with your Setup to reach max hp. Some others will need to chime in with Setup suggestions to get you where you want to be

not all cams require piston notching. Call the manufacturer and speak wth them directly. Most mild cams are ok for clearance. Just check first.
