You know that little guy that lives in the back of your head? You know the one....The little dude that warns you when you about to make the wrong choice. He's the same little dude that pokes you every now and then when you're sound asleep, and causes you to second guess yourself. He's not doing it out of malice,...he just's wants you to be safe,..to be sure.

That little dude has been yelling at me ever since I've had the car running,....and I've been ignoring him.

The transmission has a problem. It might not be a big problem, but it has a problem nonetheless.

The engine dies when I try to put the car in second gear at idle. Much in the same way that any engine would die if there was a manual transmission left in gear, and allowed to idle. I've been ignoring that since I've gotten it running,..but there's clearly something wrong. Little dude made me realize that last night when I took the car on the interstate drive.
There are two buttons that ground the internal solenoids in the transmission. One puts the car in OD, and the other is suppose to lock up the converter. It's this function that isn't working, as flipping the switch on doesn't do jack. The converter is free to slip at interstate speed,..showing me 2800 RPM at what I think is around 70 MPH.
It's also the problem that causes the car to die when I put it in second at idle. The L/U is engaged in second,...and disengaged in the other 3 gears..(I think that it will idle in 3rd,..I gotta check that). If the L/U is working properly, I'm supposed to see an additional 200-300 RPM drop when it's engaged, and I'm not supposed to subject it to full throttle acceleration when it's engaged..

I called Transgo,..and dude told me that I have a check ball in the wrong place, or some sticking valve. That means I have to drain the trans,..and remove the pan and the valvebody while laying under the car,..on my back.

While all of that red fluid oozes down my foreams into my armpits.........yay....I just can't wait.

The little guy in my head is telling me that I phcked up one of the VB passage ways when I drilled through it as part of the modification process....I distinctly remember being concerned that the bit walked on me while I was drilling, and significantly ate into another passageway,...and little dude is telling me that that is the problem,..and not a misplaced check ball.....I'm thinking little dude is right.

So then,...here I've been full throttle wailin' and upshifting into two where there is potentially a locked up converter in second gear......I'll be surprised if I don't find carnage in the bottom of the pan when I drop it.

Well good Mike!

I was afraid you'll have your monster running and go off and forget us like the other builders have done.

Now you're stuck with me for at least a couple weeks to a month!:D

You see, this is the way God will help you justify that two post lift in the new garage. You sly dog you! Slipped with a drill bit......Ok, i'll belive you.

Mike....remember a few pages back when you self diagnosed yourself a car hypochondriac? Step back, take a breathe, clear your head...tell that little guy in the back of your head to SHUT THE FCK UP, and check the simple stuff first. Remember when you thought there was something major wrong with the tune when it ended up being you just ran out of gas?

You're welcome! :D

Yes,..and maybe I gave off an alarmist vibe.....But the fact of the matter is that I do have something wrong. The fix is gonna involve dropping the pan and removing the VB.

So,....This is gonna be the diag path when I get home today.
YES NO
#1 start the car warm it up a little, attempt to put it in 3rd gear and see if it stalls.
#2. attempt to put the car in 2nd gear and see if it stalls.
#3 Call transgo and tell them what I learned.
#4 Put the car way the hell up in the air, drain trains pan.
#5 Get lazy #2 son to come into garage.
#6 Have #2 operate L/U toggle to determine solenoid function.
#7 remove valvebody.
#8 Order rebuilt VB so I can do same mod junk to new VB.
#9 Drill hole in VB using knowledge gained from 1st mistake.
#10 Reinstall VB
#11 Get lazy #2 back in car to test solenoids
#12 Put pan on, fill trans,...test.
#13 Get back on here and either btch. or cheer.

Well Mike I have to give it to you sir. You were able to finish the tune on the monster without any assistance. Car sounds great btw, to just destroy those 315 tires like that it must be belting out at least 450/450
whatchutalkinbout willis? That tune is 99% all you...All I did was mess w/ the AFR/VE table mismatch, and things came in line. It still needs some tweaking,...and after I get that problem w/ the transmission behind me, I'll strive for complete drivability (there is some off throttle stumble when transitioning from coast to accell) , but right now even that is a mild annoyance that I can live with till I get it right.

As far as the power is concerned,...I don't know yet..The tire blazing thing it's doing is encouraging, but I'm betting that it's about 100/100 less than that in actuality.

Well,....up to step #4

A diag determined that the converter is locked up in 2nd, and 3rd,...and that across the board is a bad thing.
Considering that the instructions state in big bold letters not to subject the converter to full throttle acceleration when locked up,...Meeeehhhhh.....I'm thinking those vids from Monday are a testament to the fact that I did not heed those instructions.

So,...Next comes the dirty work....draining and dropping the pan,..Typically, if I fragged anything in the transmission,..I'll know that as soon as the pan is off.
Then the removal of that valvebody....Maybe I'll go down there tomorrow morning before work, and drain the pan,...
I did manage to find a core valve body in case something is phcked up with that passage I had to drill through...

we'll see whats what soon enough i guess.

Shine on You Crazy Diamond! You could get a 3 car garage?!?! Maybe...if you ask nicely and say Please ALOT! I

Dammit, man! That sucks about the tranny, but damn that is one freaking cool angle of the Monster. Those back tires look like steamrollers up in the air!! That wheel color treatment is really starting to grow on me too!

Well, what have we learned since 5:54 PM? (Wash your hands before using your phone to type)
We learned that Hornito's is a really good tequila. Best chased by a shot of bloody mary mix. (You should try it,..no gringo asssed licking of salted hands/arms,..no biting of limes,...just the tomatoey goodness of bloody mary mix to hide the tequila burn)

We're talkin Sunday before I see the monster again,...I'm off, the wifes watching the Sorry assed Superbowl w/ some friends that yell at TV's...
(I could've gone with her, but I didn't want to have to dig out my I could give a fck-O-meter). So, she goes to yell at a TV supporting a team that she has nothing more in common with than south eastern geography,..and I get to fix my car.

How perfect is that?

Baahaahaahaa!

I'm at step #6. The solenoids all "click" like they're supposed to....

Only I ain't dropping this thing till more of that red sht drips off...

The pan was remarkably free of crap,....guess that's a good thing..

Granted,..the transmission only has 70-80 miles on it (if that). The magnet in the upper corner was coated in black film,....I know that was/is some of the friction material,..but again it was only a film,....so,........so far, so good.

You should try Don Julio 1942 if you're ever so inclined. It drinks like good scotch. So, do shoot it, savor it.
Hornitos has pepper in it....not like a jalapeno,..like the black kind instead...way different than any tequila that I've ever tasted. And I would only "shoot" the nasty sht....Like Cuervo gold...(which means,..I never drink cuervo)
all of the white/silver types like Don Julio,..Corazon, Casadores.. I'll sip.
