Just rolled 200,000 miles on my 96. Still runs great and I have really beat the hell out of this thing. Purchased used with 46,000 miles pure stock in July 2002.
Mods are in sig but I figured I'd list issues with car over the years. I broke up the repairs into major and minor with major being the ones you may bring to someone to fix and minor being the ones you can do yourself with minimal tools. The only repairs I "outsourced" was the pinion bearing.
Major repairs:
--Pinion bearing...was bad when I bought the car but didn't really know I had a problem until it got worse. Used the opportunity to swap in 4.10's at 60,000 miles.
--AC compressor clutch at 80,000 miles.
--Throw-out bearing...lost it around 110,000 miles. Replaced clutch at the same time.
--Intake Manifold...Cracked at about 130,000 miles. Probably would have been more of an issue if I had paid someone to fix. Simple swap with the right tools. Swapped with PI intake with adapter plates.
--Rear wheel bearing...170,000 miles. Replaced axle shaft also since the bad bearing ate it up.
Minor repairs:
--3 sets of brake pads and one swap of rotors
--3 alternators but I attribute 2 of them to the piggyback under drives I had on the car. Removed and haven't had a problem since.
--Radiator cracked around 130,000. Easy swap.
--Radiator fan when bad around 130,000 also. Operating temps improved with the new fan and found that is attributed to a better design.
Right now it needs ball joints and probably a refresh of the front end bushings. I have some Steeda X2's at my feet so just have to find the time to get it done. I also have a real bad issue with the paint. Started peeling at about 100,000 miles. It is the only thing that pisses me off about the car.
I've had over 75 passes at the track, lots of over revved missed shifts and plenty of run-ups that I won't get into. If I had to take it to a shop for repairs I guess the money spent would have been a big issue but a lot of the issues were also attributed to how I drive the car so I can't really complain.
Now that I think about it...time to make a celebratory trip to the track. Haven't been in quite sometime.
