My buddy says to me I would like to drop around $2500 on my 92 Gt. He wants to go N/A so I was thinking I would need some help helping him out. The car has just rolled over 110k but is cherry mechanically is very straight and all stock. I was thinking headers, catback, x pipe, intake, heads, pullies, Throttle body, MAF, and some injectors? He did say he would like to keep the stock cam becasue he hates the way cames alter the idle ( I tried telling him it would benfit him if he did but he is set that he does not want one). So since both him and myself are going to be doing this is should be rather easy. I have not personally attempted to install heads but a intake and valve covers and the 5.0 is a pretty easy ca to work on from that work and the heads looked very easy to get to. I was thinking a cobra intake possibly with maybe Gt40 heads or should I go explorer heads? He wants somthing somehwhat mild and everyday driver streetable. So some mild heads and intake setup with full exhaust, TB, MAF and injectors if needed, pullies and some supension work is probally his best route for what he wants? Anyone have any imput I would appreciate it alot.

They all sound like good directions to take, especially the boat, lol. A man can never get in enough fishing.

I probably wouldn't go with the GT-40 heads. I believe they are a 64cc chamber and will lower static compression on a 5L. I would probably look for a set of good used aluminum heads from a motivated seller and the other components you mentioned. Edelbrock, AFR, Holley, TrickFlow etc.

With a planned expense of 2500 it always ends up being 3K, and for 3K it ends up 3500 and on and on.

With a stock car I prefer to start with the chassis and suspension and then put power to them, but that's just me. And only if I planned on keeping the car for a while.

srothfuss was reading my mind. the trick flow top end kit - and i would see how much to have the bottom end refreshed if it needs it. if not - well there's a thousand items you can have rebuilt, cleaned up, upgraded etc with the remaining money. maybe even a shot of n2o to really put that mustang into orbit.

So here is what i have so far,

1. Keep stock heads
a.trick flow intake street heat
b.70mm TB and EGR
c.73mm MAF
d. CAI
e.Underdrives
f.headers
g.cat back
h.x pipe
i.24 lb injectors or even keep stockers?
j.control arms, shocks, sway bar, strut tower, subframes
k. 3.55s

This sound like a decent combo?

if you can get all that for $2500 then hell yes. i would keep the stock injectors and buy a used 94/95 maf at that power level. maybe get an afpr.

Yea I was thinking he should go with aftermarket mass air, alot of these parts will be off ebay as well so I will be discounting alot of the parts bought, also I pm you about those gt40 heads, and lastly i do not know alot of the abbrevations what is the afpr all about lol? Thanks.

AFPR - adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

Don't forget to update the fuel pump. The stocker is only rated at 88 lph at best. At a minimun you'll need a 155 lph unit for a N/A (naturally aspirated) application and 255 lph unit for all super charged / turbo'd applications

I assume by AFPR he means a fuel pressure regulator?

Listen man dont keep stock heads, you will want to drive your car off of a cliff when you realize you only picked up 25 hp, they are GARBAGE. If he wants a nice street combo
brand new set of GT-40 X heads for $1,000
E-cam (this wont really effect your idle) $150ish
Some kind of intake (cobra, trick flow whatever you decide) $350-$450
24lb injectors and MAF $300
MAC Throttle body (i think mine was around $140 with the egr plate.)
MAC ceramic coated equal length headers (i would keep shorties for the mild combo) that would be around $250-$270
255 pump $100 "(just to be safe)
3.73 gear $500-$600 (if you take it to shop)

that puts you a little over, but thats also estimating **** all knew and assuming you take the gear to a shop to do.

Ok lol both my friend and I are checking this post out and keep going around and around on what he wants from all the suggestions. considering the car has somewhere around 110k a rebuild will be coming in the next year or so. Since I have a powerdyne in the mail as we speak so he wanted to go n/a but I think I have him talked into dropping the 1500 on the S/C now. Like I said by the time the motor finally goes he says he will have to money to go threw and just replace everything in the bottom end as well as heads. So bolt on route is where we are gonna go now. So he is gonna do this, pretty similar to my setup,

powerdyne 6 psi kit $1,650 shipped
Trick flow street heat upper/lower
70MM TB and EGR spacer
stock MAF for now as well as injectors
headers,catback,x pipe
no pump as well using the FMU included in kit

We both figured that this will overall perform better and be a easier install rather than digging into the heads cam ect. When we do finally decide to do this it will be to rebuild the entire engine and we both will have more experience on things with us installing S/Cs on our cars. plus when we rebuild it the S/C will only make the car shine even more. We both are going 6psi and figure that is a great starting point and he should be alright with this setup right? It is going to be close to my setup and I was told I could use the stock pump, MAF and injectors as long as the FMU is tuned right which it should be. If anyone thinks n/a before s/c let me know but I think this is a wiser descion.

TFS Twisted Wedge kit + sub frame connectors. Full length welded SFC's are the first mod you should do to any Stang.

FYI- The Explorer GT-40P head has a smaller combustion chamber at 59cc. With stock pistons, it should be about 9.5 to 1 CR.
With the "p" heads you need to get a special set of headers to fit for spark plug clearance. The FMS stainless steel ones are about $300.
