255/35/18 vs. 275/40/17 ..Which covers more gap?

I'm an idiot when it comes to wheels and tire..My car currently has an Eibach spring kit and I will ge getting new wheels and tires soon (i have some cobra 17 right now but they are in bad shape so will either get a new set of cobras or saleens). I want a combination that will make the gap smaller. I know the 18" wheels are bigger but the tires are smaller then the 17" ones so I'm not sure.

To be honest, the difference is not enough to worry about. Just get the size you perfer.

I had a 265-70-17 tire next to a 275-60-20 tire and they were almost exactly the same.

255/35 18 is 25" overall diameter while 275/40 17 is 25.67"

275/40 17 is closest to stock diameter size so your speedometer will be accurate while the 255/35 18 will read 2.61% too fast.

Are you wanting to do a staggered size front to back or same size all around?

staggered.....i want 295s on the back and 275 on the front (maybe 265)...I just want to cover the gap as much as possible

I run my 18's with 255/35 up front and 295/35 on the rear I don't like the tracking from too wide of a tire on the front.

get the 275/40R17's since they are taller that means they will eat up a little more of your wheel gap, but thats a very ricey statement to make just to let you know....
