275/40/r17 ?????

i have these tires on my fox body hatch and they rub in the wheel wells and is actually digging into my tire when i hit bumps creating a groove on the outside of the tire ..... do i need to get skinnier tires ? i really dont want to is there is a way around this

I have 275/40/17s on the rear of my 90 LX. I had to "massage" the inner wheel well in the rear so they didn't rub, but no modifications to the fender lip! Backspacing is key!
