My boy just installed a T70 turbo on a stock 4.6 with minor mods. 70mm throttle body, Pro Products intake plenum, 42lbs injectors and 90mm MAF. He just got the car dyno tuned and the HP numbers came in kinda low to me, 330 RWHP and the TQ is unknown right now... He didn't tell me.. Does this sound kinda low to you guys also? I was thinking at least 400-RWHP minus the 15% drivetrain loss with a manual tranny. Oh I forgot to mention the car has 112,000 on the odemeter. But he changes the oil like every 3000 miles and the oil comes out like brand new everytime.. I know cause I have witnessed it.

After listening to him complain for about 30 minutes, I told him Hp for top end and TQ for bottom end. Told him you only feel torque... Well he picks the car up today from the shop and it's raining here in Philly. So he won't be able to get the seat-of-your-pants feel today..

I will let you guys know what he thinks about the car after..

What year is the car is it an automatic or 5 speed.

so basically a stock NPI car? My dyno guy told me he has seen stock NPI cars only make 180-195 rwhp if his was like that then he got like a 65% increase in power which is real good.
Alot of people forget to get a reading before a major mod how or better yet an ET. How do you know what % of an increase you recieved without that info.

If its a npi car then that is not too bad for HP numbers. there is a bullitt style intake manifold over at corral.net in the classifieds that work work super with that setup and its pretty cheap.

I actually wouldnt be too upset with those numbers...If he wants head work talk to jim at renegade racing and he can do a super job with npi heads that wont increase the compression like a pi swap would.

Post some pics up of the car and the engine because I would love to see a npi turbo.

this is his set-up

If he were to swap to a PI Intake and PI cams i bet he would gain @ 50rwhp....now if he went with a SVO/FRPP intake and some Comp or Crower NPI blower-turbo cams the gains would be huge.

As of now his stock NPI Intake and cams are HUGE corks in the system. They will choke off airflow after @ 4500 rpms and even with the Turbo hurt performance.

330rwhp is still good, i have seen basically stock NPI's with Vortechs only put down 250-275rwhp.

that was my next suggestion. Even on a budget, there is at least 40rwhp left on the table, that can be had just by swapping PI intake and cams. That would be an excellent bang for the buck mod, and would cost somewhere around $300 if he does the labor himself (should be cake). SVO manifold would be nice but it's really expensive. You also need to bear in mind that with the PI manifold and cams alone, he'll be at around 380hp to the wheels, and with 100k+ on the clock, I wouldn't go any higher unless he has money for a built shortblock

Well how many PSI is he running?

Turbos like free flowiing exhaust and intake systems...the NPI sucks all around as far as thats concerned. Cams are small, heads are worse then PI, NPI intake is WAY worse than PI.

Ill say a full PI swap will gain in excess of 100RWHP...turbos respond HUGE to changes like that.

ALSO MAKE SURE HE DOESNT HAVE FLOWMASTERS (or other chambered mufflers)...he NEEDS STRAIGHT THROUGH MUFFLERS (like magnaflow) . FLowmasters cost a turbo car around 20RWHP vs straight through mufflers. Exhaust flow is a HUGE deal on turbo cars.

Good luck to both of you :)

heres the update. nothing to do with the horse power but just to show you how some places try to get you on the price of work.
his car was running rich and fouled the plugs. So he took it to a friend of ours and they did a full tune up. Plugs, wires and even changed his oil again. So not to risk fouling the plugs again before the tune, he had the car TOWED to the shop that was going to dyno it. the guy calls him and tells him he needs all new plugs because when he got the car they were all shot. My boy was like WTF!!! "dude I never even started the car after the new plugs were put in, so i'm not paying for your new plugs, if the plugs are bad now you F'd them up!!!"

This is the same place that wanted to charge another friend of mine $14,000 for a turbo install and get this they also wanted to charge him $250 to dyno the car so they could show him the differance in HP after the mods.. Be careful of JD's Auto Repair in Abington, PA he does good work but he will try to get you on the price...

JD's is good and only about 25mins from my house but i'll gladly travel the 2 hours to Kauffmans in Dillsburg.
