Not if you get the low profile dr's(275/40/17's) but yes if you get some 275/50/15's

Well i'm going to be putting them on 16 inch wheels off of a 94 gt and just change them at the track. I've just been hearing how hard these cars launch with 4:10's and drag radials and i don't want to leave parts at the starting line.....

After my FRPP 4.10's were installed my times got worse.
I was slidding and slipping everywhere because my tires were
bald. After I got a brand spanking new set of Nitto DR's
my times started changing quick on the GTech!
You should get some Nitto DR's they will help your times
like they did me.

The axels and rearend in general are my main worry. I have no doubt in my mind that they'll make my car faster i'm just worried about breaking stuff because i can't afford to be fixing alot of stuff.

well I have seen axles break on 315 DRs down to 275 DRs

When my buddy took his 315 555Rs to the track broke his axle, his caliper, and his broke his rotor in half.

Yet I have seen some launch on slicks for months till the rear gave out

just a matter of time

it's the axles that are the weak point in our cars. the 8.8 is a very good rear end for a modern muscle car. just think we could drive camaros with a 7.5 inch

all you need is a 31 spline axle and carrier setup. then your all set. a better limited slip would'nt hurt either.

4.10s + 5 speed + Drag Radials = 31 spine axels

...or you'll break an axel eventually...

you have to get a new differential with 31 spline axles. the stock differential is only 28 spline. simply.. 4.10s+5 speed+drag radials = broken rear.

what about just getting stronger 28 spline axles like the ones from Auburn Gear? stronger than stock and can still use your stock diff. just not as strong as 31 spline... thoughts?

If you are going to spend the money on upgrading, i dont see why you wouldn't get the 31s. Go big or go home

One approach I was told was....

Breaking axles seems to be a hit-and-miss affair. Some snap them with stock set up. Some make it to 300+ without a problem. You can upgrade your axles now, or wait till they break and upgrade them then. Generally, it will be the same cost now or later. The only concern with doing it when they break is you might be out of a car for a day or two.

Popping the clutch at high RPM slams the axles. Autos are easier on the axles due to the slipping of the tranny.

thats what i said. all the needs is 31 spline axles and a 31 spline carrier.

when i refer to a diff i am taling about the whole unit. the carrier is part in the middle where the ring gear bolts too. you don't need a whole diff. you just need too change too a 31 spline side gear. and for that you needthe whole carrier.

Thanks for all the info guys. So how big of a job is it to swap axels? I've never done anything like that before so it's all new to me.
