I have a very strange situation. I have a 68 cougar. The motor in it is a 1985 302 out of a 85 mustang (duraspark, rollercam, forged pistons). Looks like when the PO put it in, he used mostly 68 brackets and acessories (v-belt). He even found a reverse rotation water pump that has a v-belt pulley. Now my timing cover just cracked and I'm spewing coolant everywhere. I would like to upgrade to the 5.0 serpentine belt system. Can I use a early (dip stick in it) timing cover, reverse rotation water pump (5.0 style), and 5.0 brackets? I'm going to run a 3G alt (already know how to do that) and AC only. I know there are belt roughtings out there that will allow me to do that. So, will the timing cover, rev rot waterpump, and 5.0 brackets work?

thanks
Austin

If you are using an electric fuel pump use the brackets, harmonic balancer, water pump, AND timing cover from a serpentine (79-93) Mustang. The timing cover will need a hole to be drilled for the dipstick. The water pumps for this era are reverse rotation, and there are high-flow upgrades available if you want to run one.

If you want to run a mechanical pump, get one of the universal style timing covers from Summit, Edelbrock, or Ford Racing-- they'll work w/ a serpentine system and already have a boss for a mechanical fuel pump, or see if you can wrangle up a timing cover from a 79-85 Mustang. The timing covers from the EFI cars, of course, aren't meant for a mechanical pump.

Do you have power steering? If not check with March Performance in their 5.0 section for power steering eliminator setups.
