65/66 Tail Light Bodies W/O Socket?

Hi all--

A few years back, you used to be able to buy tail light bodies for the 65/66 that didn't use the socket/pigtail set up. Anyone still make these? I tried the Mustang Steve setup, but couldn't get them to work. I'm tired of the Do My Tail Lights Work Today game that comes with the socket.

If you have a pair, or know where I can get a pair, let me know.

I'm interested in this, too. I've got six taillight buckets total and it seems there is always at least one out.

Does anyone have any tricks to keeping the light socket contacts in touch with the pigtail?

The only LED kits I've seen either use the existing sockets--I'll still have problems with the pig tails--or are sequential (which isn't a problem) and cycle when you put on your brakes.

Is there a LED kit that doesn't fall into these two categories?

Oh I see so you don't like the sequntial setup in particular, I think the odds were against that when I suggested it so it never dawned on me as that was the set up I was thinking of. I have to believe the sequencer is easily bypassed if that is your only worry.

Perhaps it custom fabrication time then?

This is an indirect answer, but I bought some standard ones at a swap meet and am in the process of modifying them. When done, they will each have two 1189 bulbs (I think that's the number), one on each side of what was original. I've taken the original sockets out and am about to paint the inside as described below. I never did have the problem you describe, they were just not all that bright. I got what is in the car to be brighter by simply scuffing up the reflectors and then painting them with semigloss white paint so the relection would be better. I also polish the lens with motorcycle windshield plastic polish. They really are brighter, but I want more. I'll have to find a heavier duty flasher though since more current will flow. Might also have to drill a hole in the top of each body if they get too hot.

UPDATE!

Just ordered a set with built in bullet connectors from American Pony. Had to spread the bullet connectors a bit to get a tight fit in my harness, but they are in, and work, without those damn barrell connectors. Now I can take things in and out of the trunk without worrying that I'll bump my harness and lose a taillight.

I highly recommend them. They were about 19 a pair. They are listed as for early 65, but dropped into my 66 and since I show in daily driver. . . .

Aw man.

I'm dealing with this right now as I had already bought new tail light housings for my 66 (which should have integral wiring) and ended up getting pigtail 65 housings with no wiring. Now I have this shiny new-from-the-paint-shop car and I can't drive it because I'm waiting on $20 worth of wiring to be delivered. I would rather have the other kind without worrying about this inferior pigtail crap. Bummer
