okay guys, heres whats going on. Im planning on installing a whole new stereo setup in my 65 coupe. the stock speakers/repo speakers with the stock head unit is trash, and nows the time for an upgrade. Here is what i am planning/want, and hopefully you guys can help me out with parts/knowledge/info.
-After market headunit installed in glove box. Remote opperated. (ease of changing cds/channels while driving)
-CD changer mounted in trunk
-Replace stock front dash speaker
-2 new speakers in the back deck.
Possibliy of a sub mounted in the trunk.
I want the sound quality to be good, not show car quality or very high (read expensive). I want a good, solid set up, with good sound quality.

Please post suggested setups/parts which you guys would suggest. Also, what will i need to power this setup (HU and speakers)in terms of an amp? i have a Pioneer 400 watt, 2 channel amp laying around, could this be put to use?
thanks, hopefully ill finally a have an enjoyable system in the 65. :)

my 68 coupe setup

what i did to my 68 coupe is pretty much what ur doing. i put the head unit
in the glove box with a custom inset i built for it. i have 6.5 pioneer speakers in the kick panels, two pioneer 5way 6x9 speakers in the rear, i installed a power antenna, i have a power acoustik mofo12 sub and a power acoustik
amp , power acoustik cap. the head unit in the glove box looks sick, i get a lot of props for that, too bad i don't have pics so u can see. i have about 1800w rights now and its good enough for me, i bought everything new total cost $800. well worth it.

sn1per2121 thanks for the reply. sounds like you have a sick setup in a classic. how are you powering your 5way speakers? are they straight from the HU, or through a crossover/amp combo? obviously i only know basic stereo stuff. it would be great if you could post how you wired it all up. (meaning rear speakers were powered by.....) i know how to wire in subs, its just the components/deck speakers that confuse me. also, is your HU powered by the amp?
thanks allot

BullitStangv8, I like the idea of installing a HU in the glove box!

I also have some positive criticism for you. A word that immediately comes to mind when I read that you wanted "sound quality" is "imaging." You can replace your one dash speaker and your two rear speakers with decent aftermarket ones, but you will have poor imaging. Another thing you will want is to maybe even get a woofer or two. You won't need anything big, just something that can play the lower frequencies for you.

If you want sound quality and imaging in that style of car, I think you will have to do what sn1per has done and build kick panels and install a 5.5 or a 6.5 component set. If you buy a high end component set, along with a good install and proper power supply, you more than likely will not necessarily need a rear fill. But I do suggest buying a subwoofer for the trunk.

To sum it up, forget replacing the front dash speaker and rear fill speakers. Spend the money on a good component set & kick panels as well as a nice clean amp to power them. If you have the cash you can definitly have a rear fill. In many cases it can get rid of the rainbow effect from an unperfect install of the kickpanels. Furthermore, it would improve your range and imaging a great deal in my opinion if you added a woofer or two in the trunk. Two 10's (one good 10 with proper power and install could do the job) or one 12 would be sufficiant.

DaFeared thanks for the imput. only thing about kick panel speakers is that im trying to keep the interior looking original/using factor location for speakers. A sub in the trunk would be awsome and something that i would be planing after the basic interior install is done. is it possible for me to get good sq and "imaging" with only a speaker in the front, and 2 in the back deck? Could i possibly have good sound with a high quality speakers inthe front and 2 on the deck?

If you put good speakers in, I"m sure you can get decent sound. However, the idea is to get sound comming from the front, not the back. You know what I"m saying? You don't stand with your back to the stage at a concert so why would you want that in your car?

Don't get me wrong here, if you get really good speakers and power them with an external amplifier you can get loud and clear music! I"ve heard lots of good cars with just fronts and rear speakers. In fact before I built kick panels I used to have my setup the way you are doing yours, but now I would never go back. I just can't see how you could stage it properly.
