65 headers?

Hey
i got some headman headers that i am not exactly pleased with
aside from them being kind of an eye sore, they are very much close to impossible to get a wrench to. i don't exactly work on my headers all the time, but i swear to god i don't know how i got them of and on the last time i did it. due to a lot of patience and ingenuity on my part and a couple of friends of mine, we got those suckers off. i don't know if it's because they are damaged or because that's how they are designed but either way i want new ones. I plan on getting some Edelbrock Heads so i want something that can take advantage of the exhaust ports on that. is it the same as stock? i saw that someone put 351 heads on their 302, is that a 'nono' or a taboo thing to do? because that seems like a good way to get a cheap set of better flowing heads, am i wrong?

anyway i was hopeing that you could help me find a set of headers that someone has preferably one for Power Steering and short; since i need that precious clearance space! . anyway i am sorry if this has been answered too many times to count, but i either am incompetent at searching or i don't know where to find this answer. thanks

Well as far headers go, I am not sure what ones you could go with. Hooker makes a good set, Maybe some FRP's..I run with a set of headmans on a 351 in a 65, and I have no problems at all.

Well as far as the 351 heads on a 302, yes that will work, but I think you have to do a few things. You would probaly need 351 swap headers for that combo. I do believe that is what a Boss 302 engine is..351 heads on an 302.

Though I could be wrong.

I had '69 351w heads on my '65 289 and used a set of Hooker Super Comps for a 302 in a '65-'66 Mustang and it worked fine. The deck height on a 351w is higher than a 289/302 so that's why they have the 351w specific headers for putting a351w in a '65-'66. There are two different style 351 heads, the Windsor and the Cleveland. The Cleveland heads on a 302 are what makes a Boss 302.

I'm not sure when they changed but later 351 heads won't do you any good. The early ones are the ones with the bigger valves. The 351's also had bigger combustion chambers than early 302's. You might want to check and see what that would do to your compression.

Danny: That is part of the reason i am looking for a slightly lower compression ratio with better flow for future upgrades.

Stangninjak & 1320stang: So bassically if i geta pair of 69 windsor heads and a set of 351 swap headers from like BBK is what i can see on summit racing. i need shorties, but i don't want to sacrifice being able to take my headers off.

Does anyone with Headman Shorties have dificulty using even a very small box wrench?

also what cam would be preferable for a pair of 351w heads to keep a nice idle while roaring a bit more ?

hi, sorry to bring this back, but i didn't really get these last questions answered and i am going to go ahead and slap on the 69 heads i have on my 289 until i get the rest of the 351w going.

just for clairity's sake.

my big questions are. will i see a performance increase if i get a new cam?

do i need 351w swap headers?

and lastly what cam should i get for an otherwise stock 4barrel 289. ( everything i have is in sig ) ? i'm going to come into enough money to get this swap done this weekend so i want to jump ahead and do some work on my car while i still have the Time to do so. i saw a lot of people with 69 351w heads in their sig. help me out guys !! i know you're there and i gotta say i love this forum!!

Nope, the 351w headers are for putting the whole 351 in the car as the deck height is higher, the heads are dimensionally the same.

thanks, that's what i thought because of the deck height of the block, but someone in this thread even said they thought i would need them. Thanks 1320, you're my hero to debunk what i was thinking .

now i just have to find an affordable cam and i'll be set..i suppose heh.

ah, the old box wrench too big around to get on the bolt syndrome, ...you have two options, get yourself a good quality wrench, and grind the outside down until it fits, OR (my favorite solution) flag down a snap on tools truck, and buy yourself a 3/8" 12 point wrench. i just installed a set of hedmans, and it is pretty tight. i have a snap on, and, i think, a bonney box end wrench, and they are the only 2 wrenches i have that will even come close to fitting
