68 Shelby Console - Details?

I'm really interested in putting a '68 Shelby console into my car, my holdups are the $500 pricetag they come with, the woodgrain, and the carpet on the sides.

Since I've got a '67 I'd like to have a brushed aluminum surface rather than the woodgrain - can anyone with a '68 Shelby tell me if the surface of the woodgrain is "smooth" or is it "textured" in anyway?? I doesn't appear that an appliqué would be easy to make or apply, but I'm curious about painting it... Also I'm wondering if the carpet wraps up under the pads on the sides. I'm considering cut-pile carpet for my car and this wouldn't look quite right since it's the loop style.

To me, it looks similar to the 68 Shelby console except it already has the brushed aluminum look you are wanting instead of the wood grain. I didn't see any prices on their website but it seems like I read somewhere that they are in the $500 range. Also, check out the Reenmachine sticky at the top of the tech page. This console was used in that car and there are several pics of it throughout the post.

I made one similar to the Shelby console, Changed a few thing..center e-brake, aux switches, arm rest height etc.. I'm trying to finsh it using, are you ready for this........ aluminum shelving adhesive paper. I already used the paper to cover the beat up aluminum plate on my 67 overhead console. Can't tell the difference. Just need to find a way to mold lexan plastic for the brake lever area....

tweet66 do you have any pictures? I'm tempted to make my own, but I can't think of a good / eye appeasing way of doing the pads on the sides and I think it'll look unfinshed without them...

Okay lets see if this work....last time I tried to post pics I got skunked.

I do wan tto change the arm rest. I don't like the way the cover came out, but for a first time use of a sewing machine it's not too bad

HOLY CRAP IT WORKED!
Here's another


The idea was to copy the Shelby console with a late model (mid 80's) arm rest and fit the e-brake. It's all 1/2 plywood that's routed, glued and screwed together. I borrowed my Mom's sewing machine and made the cover out of vinyl. I just need to find a way to mold a plexiglass cavity for the e- brake handle to rest in. The pic with the plexi on top is an insert that will be cover in the "shelf paper".

tweet66 that looks good!! Let us know how the aluminum stuff turns out, I wasn't really keen on spending $500+ on a console, but looking at yours I'm tempted to try that myself!

I'll post some pics of the upper console when I get home today. It's a stock 67 coupe upper with the paper over the original aluminium plate. The plate was scratched up in storage and my move back to NJ from FL (still not sure why...). The paper is pretty thin so it conforms to irregularities well that there are a few dents in the overhead panel that are visible.

tweet, i like your affordable bling alot. For molding lexan, try a wooden block shaped to the mirror image of what you need and throw it with the lexan sheet on it in a low temp oven or use a heat gun. It is formable. Good luck.

I installed that one in my car but covered the wood grain in black vinyl and replaced the corba emblem on the arm rest since this photo was last taken.

The seats are custom flo-fits from a company called M-Detail (FordMustangSales.com) and cost about $1,500/pair.
