7.5 trac loc = 8.8 trac loc?

May be a dumb question but I was looking at a table last night that was a little confusing.

Can the 8.8 dif units be swapped into a 7.5 rear by just changing the ring gears?

Heres where I saw the table Click Here.

Items 4, 5, 6,7 all list the same base part number, so I had to ask.

All that really tells me is that Ford has different part numbers for different difs.

What I am getting at is the sharing of same base part number. Does this mean that the basic casting is the same, and that maybe pin diameters (as an example) vary with application?

Anyone have a 7.5 and 8.8 unit they can compare? I won't be able to get the 7.5 out of my car for another month or so, even though I have an 8.8 that I can get to.

I would just like to know what the differences are.

Ford uses the same "base" p/n to group like parts together. At the plant, all of our a/c assemblies all have the same first 7 or numbers then they change to the actual identifying part. And the diffs are not interchangable or Ford would only make one.

self explainitory question.

How to you mount an 8.8 inch ring gear on a 7.5 inch carrier?

Not to flame, but when you say 7.5 or 8.8 that actually refers to the diameter of the ring gear itself.

the carriers are different, i've set up numerous 7.5's and 8.8's, and there most certainly is a difference.

If you think a bit about how they are set up, the diameter difference makes them inherently different. That said, no, there are very few interchangeable parts. I have both.

And then you realize that heavy duty 8.8's are even somewhat more different, with even larger cross shafts, and related items.

You gotta get parts for each. I am sure that some interchange, but it was not worth it to just try, so I bought 8.8 stuff for that one.

The one thing that did work was my homemade carrier spreader tool, as the carrier bearing hole centers are the same as the7.5, but the unit is larger, because it was much harder to get out throught the tool.
