I have just purchased a relatively stock 5.0 mustang with AOD. It has the stock 2:73 gears. I am in Colorado elev 5280ft. Most stangs run about a second slower than sea level but is 16.8 what a stock AOD runs at sea level? The car seems to be running fine. I have 2.8 sixty foot times. No wheel spin. I have nothing out of the hole. The car doesnt seeme to come alive until I hit 3500 rpm. Could this all be changed with a set of gears. My 93 5spd bone stock pulled a 15.7 here are AOD's just that much slower? I am going to install a set of 3:73 gears will this cure all my ills. Also the car has exhaust. Mac Headers, Two high flow cats and a Bassani X pipe. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't care where you are in the country, aod or t-5, 2:73's, 3:08's or 3:27's, ANY 91 5.0 sould be over 2 seconds faster. Make sure you car is running right, proper tune, ect.

Did yous spin like crazy at the line? You need to bring at 60 ft time way down. A 2.0 should put you at a mid 16, at my elevation (4500ft) a stock 5.0 with 2.73 gears will run about that time.Good Luck

that seems crazy. you should be at like a 16.8 at this altitude. my car runs a 15.7 up here which is about 14.7 at sea level, right where it should be.

Where are you in co?

get that to a 2.2, and your running ~ 16.6's at the same altitude....which say it really is 1 second less (sorry, not that easy...what was barametric pressure? i have raced at sea level tracks that have "1200' air"...)
anyway, this in theory puts ya at ~ 15.6's, which is what my stone stock 91 lx conv used to run (aod, 2.73).
3.73 gears, and nothing else got to 15.ohs. subframes, catback, and an art carr aod got me 12.99 @ 107.... of course, there was a 75 shot on it by then......

add some gears, and a converter, and learn how to drive it out the hole! anything over a 2.20 even with 2.73 gears is very poor.

you are going to need some better tires or learn how to drive the car out of the hole better. Instead of just mashing the throttle, try easing into it and add more gas as traction allows. Practice is what its going to take to get those 60's down. Gears will help with acceleration but with bad tires, they'll just cause you to spin more. Then get yourself a better converter.

Thats the "only" thing I didnt like about living there. When your a mile in the air it takes a little extra to run good times I used to go to the nationals at Bandimere and even the big boys had a hard time going fast.A good torque converter and gears are gonna do wonders for you! Dude up there you need to add power, that thin air is gonna make it tuff..Turbo's are suppose to be great in altitude!!

The only thing is I have no wheel spin. I have nothing out of the hole. I have gapped the plugs, replaced the cap, wires and rotor, checked the timing and the throttle positioning sensor. The car seems to be running great just nothing until I hit 3000-3500 rpm

Exactly a turbo would work wonders, because the air is thinner it is easier for the turbo to create boost.

I also had an 87 bone stock fully loaded aod with 2.73's and race at bandamiere--(my wifes car) when it was stone stock it ran 17.20s to 17.40s leaving the car in drive. If I did the shifter trick and down shift to hold the gear longer so it doesn't shift early I would run consistent 16.70s. Doing nothing more than swapping over to a t-5, 4.10 gears and h-pipe and exhaust I now run 15.10s. With slicks and a 150 shot of nitrous it runs 12.80s. With my personal experience at this elevation you will lose closer to 1&1/2 to 2 seconds in the quarter compared to sea level on a naturally aspirated engine. Of course there is many variables and power adder cars don't lose as much as do faster cars but the average 14 second car at sea level will run 16's at bandamiere. Again you have LS1 cars that only seem to lose about 1 second? This elevation stinks but everyone is facing the same problem--the only way to gain a huge advantage at this elevation is the use of a power adder!!!!!

I would think the car should be faster. I would check all of the usual first, any codes?, vacuum leaks, full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotar, fuel filter, ect..) I used to have an 87 gt auto, stock w/2.73's, I never went to the track, but I know if was faster than 16's (compensated for your 17's in altitude). You should be faster.

My stock aod with 2.73s went mid 15's, and thats mashing the pedal down and spinning bad. As mentioned before, easing out of the hole is going to do alot more for you then just stomping on it. Get some gears, converter and shift kit. Thats the biggest improvement you can for now besides nitrous.....

I cant get out of the hole

My problem isnt wheel spin. I dont have any. Even when I mash the throttle to the floor the mustang has zero wheel spin. It takes forever to get up to speed. Once I get to the top end of the rpm range the engine is pulling hard but I have nothing on the bottom. I purchased the car from the original owner and it does not have a camshaft. The only mods it has are in the exhaust system. Once again thanks for all the replies.

Thats normal,I couldnt spin em and Im at 900ft!! A torque converter and gears will change that drastically!!

Again my experience with bone stock 5.0 cars at bandimiere are mid to high 15's for manual cars and high 16's to low 17's for aod cars---of course this is bone stock! You will lose approx. 1 and 1/2 seconds from those other guys at or near sea level. People never believe you can lose that much with just elevation until they move up here and find out fast just like the rest of us!

P.S.--AOD cars just don't stall up as high with the power loss from the elevation so they seem to be effected more than manual cars, they just take to long to get into the power band. Just as yours my wifes 87 aod would not even think of spinning the tires out of the hole!
