okay posting this question for a buddy, I'm currently a fox guy, so I figured I would ask the guru's in the old school tech section.

My buddy is swapping a 92 302GT motor into his 70, he is staying carbed, etc, just switching motors for a new(er) rebuilt one. The car is a 1970 Mustang with a 4spd toploader, it's a 302 car so the shaft is the right size, and it looks like it will bolt up, but his dilemma is the clutch. The stock 1970 is a 164 tooth flywheel and the 92 motor is a 157 tooth flywheel. So what clutch does he need? And will he need anything else?

Thanks!
Matt

He needs a 164 tooth flywheel, however the imballance is not 50oz on the old motor so he will either need to get another flywheel or have a good machine shop change the imballance on his existing flywheel. Also, there is no provision on the 5.0 motors for the mechanical clutch linkage. I think NPD sells an adaptor bracket for this.

i'm not even sure if anyone makes a 164t flywheel for the 50 oz imbalance but the i've never really looked either. best bet is probably gonna be Mcleod or Hayes.

there are 164 tooth 50oz balance factor flywheels available. your friend may have to change the clutch disc though to fit the input shaft of the top loader.

1.) He can use a 10.5 or 11" clutch with the 164t flywheel. In order to use a 157t flywheel(for whatever reason), a 157t-specific bellhousing is needed to put the starter in the right place. If the flywheel is a stock 164t early style, a 3-finger clutch can be used. I'm relatively sure the T5s and Toploaders use the same disk in case a diaphragm clutch is needed.

2.) Yup, he'll also need one of these:

It's that little bracket hanging off the scattershield where the stoc z-bar pivot used to be. 5.0s blocks don't have that provision on the block itself like the earlier engines.
