advantages/disadvantages of X pipe?

Hey folks,
I know there are soooo many exhaust threads but I did search and only found one answer...

I am piecing together an exhaust for my father's 'other' car, and I am debating on using an X pipe or straight through mid pipes, with or without an equalizer tube (to make it an H pipe) plus flowmasters, and MAYBE also add flowmaster Hushpower II resonators.

Basically, I read that X pipes don't sound good with flowmasters. Anyone have a comment about this? Has anyone used the Hushpower II resonators?

I found another thread that said that X pipes sound a little cleaner whereas staight or H pipes sound a little deeper. I also read that X pipes provide a little (3-5) hp at upper rpms. But I didn't find anything else about X pipes and flows, other than one thread which said they don't work well together.

i had a upr x pipe with my 2 chamber flowmasters,,, it sounded greattt.. i currently am running bassani headers to a bassani x pipe to bassani mufflers im ready to go back to the flows even tho ino the quality that bassani is and how well made my mufflers are...but still might go back to the flows

The H vs. X has came up millions of times. As bcmbcmbcm said, sound and a little extra upper RPM is about the only difference.

i got flows wit a bbk x pipe and bbk shorty headers, its sounds good. the h pipe makes it sound a lil deeper but the x does give u that lil bit more hp at high rpms

Basani X pipe w/ a set of flows here, have had tons of people tell me it sounds good.

the only differance between an h an x pipe is maybe 2hp up top and a higher raspier sound ( with the x pipe) h pipes are gonna be lower and more of the classic " muscle car " sound. that being said im running bbk shorty headers bbk catted x pipe and slp loudmouth cat back. sounds great but im thinking about switching back to an h pipe.

Yep...great quality but sounds like a mild set-up.

I installed a Pypes 2 1/2 inch X-Pipe on my car,and it's been great.Nice sound,easy installation,and with the warlock mufflers,nice deep tone.

The added scavenging affect of the X-Pipe really comes into play in high horse power applications and/or large cubic inch motors. For those of us with smaller motors and low revs (below 7000 rpm) is more of a what you like sound wise. I have BBK shorties, BBK X-Pipe, and a Flowmaster cat back and love the way is sounds. Like everyone else has said, the x-pipe rips where the h-pipe is more of a classic muscle car sound.

I installed BBK shorties, a UPR x pipe, and a Flowmaster American Thunder setup two weeks ago.

So far, I love the sound, nice and deep at idle, and sort of a scream as you rev it.

And its pretty quiet at speed. Since I don't have overdrive yet, she is wound up to stay with 70+ mph interstate traffic.

It replaced a Blackjack header/Sonic turbo muffler set up that I installed in 1987, or so. That setup was also pretty quiet, but it did not have the sound the Flows give it.

H vs X on a 5.0 its about 3/4hp difference. On a 4.6 if you got with a X pipe you'll gain 15/17hp. They showed dyno numbers between the two pipes. This was in the 4.6 area and I really can't remember if it was a DOHC or SOHC motor.

I like my x-pipe basically because noone around here runs the same exhaust setup that I do, let alone through a h/c/i.

Agreed, I'll trade my X pipe for a H pipe anyday. I got an X and its raspy, got old quick....H pipes sound real deep and mean.

I see all this about H and X pipes, I guess no one likes Pro-chambers?

i do agree i think the h was louder comparing my 2 gts... but doesnt the muff have alot to do with the sound
