Advice on Shifter

Well, currently i have an old school Hurst.

It has no stop bolts. Its not a bad shifter, but smooth it is not! Now the fun part. Im trying to drive my car with a broken arm! Well its healing, but its hard! Anyways, my shifting is really suffering! The no stop bolts alone is enough to make me want a new one.

Now im looking at a Tri-ax or pro5.0. Are these shifters smooth or notchy? My friend has one in his 03 Mach1 and its smooth as butter! but i figure, thats aloso cause his tranny is newer and such.

Anyways, do you guys think this will help me any? Right now i can almost push it up into third and find the spot right between 1st and 3rd. It doesnt grind, but its not smooth at all.

i've got a Pro 5.0, and it's really good if you really rip on it; and it's smooth, and the hurst competition plus is extremely crisp and makes a nice clicking.
i was torn between the two but decided on the pro 5.0 only because i got a really good deal on it. this probably didn't help at all........

The Steeda Triax has a more versitile handle (two positions) that puts it over the top otherwise it would be even.I've had mine for about 5 years and it still works like a champ never missing third!

I have the tri-ax also. Fantastic shifter!!!!

Never miss 3rd and I love the "clicking" feel/sound you get when you shift into gear. I know that when I hear/feel that click, I'm fully in gear and I never have to worry about over-extending the shifter and damaging the forks.

If you have a broken arm, I hardly think now is the time to change shifters as there's a break-in period for any new shifter so a new tri-ax will feel stiffer than the sloppy feel you get from a broken-in shifter.

Actually, you can beat it- and this is what happens when you do:

Honestly, how notchy it shifts has more to do with the skill of the driver and internal condition of the transmission than it does with the shifter. My Pro5.0 is smooth as silk, and they have reputation for notchiness- and that's on a TKO too. It is always my first recommendation, because it's the best made out there and that's what i usually try to get whether I need it or not. if the short handle will be a problem for you (which, at least temporarily it will) then Pro5.0 makes a stock replica handle, only out of forged steel like their short throw lever. For the ultimate compromise, get the Kona http://www.konaracing.com/ which is a Pro5.0 with Kona's own handle, which is identicle to the Tri-Ax only forged steel not weak aluminum.

Compliments of Bearsystemmax, a member who underestimated his own strength one day while his T5 wasn't being cooperative. This is why Pro5.0 uses forged steel stop ring, shift lever, AND the gear selector- that this Steeda is so handicapped with now.

Crazy! I remember a while back people having problems snapping handles on their Pro-5.0s, but noting like this!

I wonder if theyd warrenty something like that! lol

Snapping handles? No, it was snapping the threads off... because people didn't like how short it was so they didn't screw the knobs on all the way. As for the Tri-Ax, last time I talked to him it had been six months since he sent it back to them, and he hadn't even heard from them yet.

Pro5.0 is the strongest one. If you break it, there isn't a shifter made that is safe from you. I have only seen it happen once, and that was why. Just get the handle length you'll be comfortable with and screw the knob on all the way rather than trying to compensate for the short one, and you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks! I can get one for about $240 which isnt too bad. I just worry about the notchyness.

My Pro 5.0 is notchy. No way I can go back to the stock rubber feel though. I don't like the notchiness, but I hate the stock one worse. Bad time to swap shifters with broken arm though. Also, I used to miss 3rd quite a bit when I first got my shifter; I learned you push almost straight up for 3rd instead of swinging out like I did with the stock one; now I can hit 3rd pretty consistent.
