AFR 165 heads, but what valve springs?

I am looking at buying a set of AFR 165cc heads, but I have been informed that the springs they come with are weak with a hydraulic roller cam. I called AFR and they have an upgrade but the spring seat needs to be machined to accept the upgrade. They also informed me that comp may have a spring package that will work. I then called comp and they threw out a part number (956-16) , but did not know if they would work. I am wondering what springs will work with these heads and a hydraulic roller cam.

call afr and find out what size the spring pocket is....then find out what size the od of the comp springs are...that will tell u if they will fit without grinding the spring pocket

Ed Curtis must be a busy guy. He does not have a number listed on his website and communicates via e-mail. I have not heard back from him and it has been four days. I did call AFR and they finally gave me a spring reccomendation. They said use comp spring package 977-16. However these seem pretty aggressive. They have a OD of 1.460, and closed pressure of 155lbs. They are also reccommended for a soild roller cam. I am not really sure what will work good with these. The stock AFR springs have an installed height of 1.850, OD 1.450, and closed pressure of 120lbs. I am curious what springs people are using with these heads and a hydraulic roller cam?

Hello,

yes, i think also that Ed is a busy man. He is "THE" man in facto custom cam and valve train.:nice:
The PS3 spring kit is the right one for your application. Max lift .600, 135 pound closed pressure @ 1.830 - 1.845, OD 1.450.
I use this spring kit with a roller custom cam from Ed with .570 and .560 lift and 224 and 228 duration (intake/exhaust).
The kit comes with shims and viton valve stem seals.

As with most serious performance shops... We were attending the PRI show in Florida to see what the industry has to offer for 2007. That's why there were no responses to emails for the past week.

In terms of valve spring choices....

We have five different spring "kits" available. Best to send the email again if I haven't responded yet. It's the only way to get me. I don't even bother with the phone here since it's extremely busy and it's nothing but a distraction. You'd hate to have your order held up a few days cuz' I'm BSing on the phone all day!
