Amp Override

Hey whats up guys just got my father a new deck and installed it but this stock amp is horrible! I need to know where it is located on a 1990 lx and a quick easy way to over ride if i just connect the wires from each side together would that be an override?
my 2nd question is i bought sony xplod 6x9's for the back anyway i can get them in or are they to big i bought em from a buddy for 25 and i'd love to get em to work. If not he said no biggie he'll take them back but I got em so cheap and money is hard to come by at 17!

you can buy the install kit that will allow you to use the amp or un plug the amp and bypass it. The amp is normally behind the radio on the foxes with the exception if the 93 it is under the passinger seat. I have a thread in talk about the 93 set up. If you follow the speaker wire plug from the radio it should go to the amp. there should be 2 plugs on the amp that are for speakers. One is the low power feed the other is the amplified output, Unplug the amplified output plug and plug the speaker harness from the radio into it. This should bypass the amp and send radio powered signals the the speakers. It will work the same was as the 93 did even though the amp is near the radio.

Also on the 93 they used a blue cord to feed signals to the amp. Prior to 93 they used low level signals direct through the speaker wire plug to the amp.

The stock amp is probably located behind the stock radio. The other possible location is under the
front passenger side seat. It is a finned box about 3"x6"x 1 /12" with 2 wiring pigtails. One of the
wiring pigtails is for the speaker wires.

One of the amp plugs has the following wire combinations:

Dk Green/orange stripe = right front speaker negative
White/lt green dash = right front speaker positive

pink/lt blue stripe = right rear speaker positive
Dk green/orange = right rear speaker negative

Lt blue/white = left front speaker negative
Orange/lt green = left front speaker positive

pink/lt green = left rear speaker positive
pink/light blue ring =left rear speaker negative

Cut this plug off the old stock amp and use it to connect to the car’s wiring harness for your new
radio. Using the plug from the old stock amp saves you from cutting the car’s wiring. Cutting the
car’s wiring is a bad idea if you ever change the radio or have to troubleshoot the speakers or
speaker wiring.

Use a flashlight battery and touch it to the pair of wires for each speaker. It should POP if the wires
are correct. If it doesn’t, switch the battery polarity.

There should be no need to cut wires. The oem plugs will fit the after market radio install kit which cost about 8.00

I had to cut mine and splice and I had the wiring harness, but on a 90 its going to be behind the radio, 91-93 are under the pass seat..

on mine i had to reach up into the dash behinds the brackets and unplug the amp speaker harness and then use the plugs that were left.

That looks like it would work for the radio system that did not use the external amp.
There is a wiring harness from Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) that will have what you need.
The Crutchfield online store is a super place to do business and they are very quick to fill and ship your order.
If you don't see it online, call their tech support phone line and they can help you find the right harness kit to order.

If you are broke and need it yesterday, use the tech note I posted to wire the speakers.
However, it is much easier to buy the harness from Crutchfield if you have the time and money.

Those will work if you reach up behind the radio bracket and find these 2 plugs:see pics
After unplugging my premium amp wire harness and removing it completely these 2 plugs are left.
(these are the same plugs the non premium cars have.But with premium sound they are hidden behind the bracketry)

NOTE THAT THEY ARE GREY AND BLACK JUST LIKE YOUR NEW AFTERMARKET INSTALL PLUGS

They were attached to the metal frame work and connected with plastic push pins.
If you follow the premium sound wires back in far enough into the dash you will find these 2 plugs.
The premium sound is a extra harness that can be removed intirely.

Ford did not install a special dash harness just for premium sound. they simply added a extra plug-in loop harness.

Heres the whole harnes for premuim sound from my 91 it is a add on. When removed I had the original NON PREMIUM plugs left as pictured above.

Wires are just not for me! Ok so I went out there and took some pics, I found no amp! Here are some pics of what im looking at I got the radio plugged into the plugs DropTop was talking about. The picture i have below is the wires running from the radio which i plugged into the wires droptop was talking about.Plugged into that circular metal thing is a thing with 2 prongs. The radio is plugged in and working but the sound is muffled and garbage and i was told to remove the amp and I would have much better sound as the radio pushed 62 or something like that itself and in my old one when i removed it the sound was so much better!

its an 88. i dont see a amp behide the radio and there isnt one under the passenger side seat?

oh ill second that, i called them and told them i was have problems getting this cd player to have sound, told them everything i have tried.

they are shipping me antoher headunit to try, great place.
