Has anyone raced an S10 V8 on the street or at the track? If so how did you do and did you find out what they had under the hood as far as V8 engines is concerned. Also what mods and hp did your car have at the time.

no, but i have raced a brand new yukon witha v8. i know they are alot bigger but by the time i shifted into 2nd gear i had 2 1/2 cars on him and by fourth it was about 12. Kinda of topic but ohwell

You had to have used the nitrous, Right! what numbers was that ranger making if you know? What are your 1/4 times without the TNT?

I remember racing, likely stock 5.0's when I had a ****ty 305 in my truck, and I would kill them from light to light with like 150hp at the crank, but traction to power was good with that combo. Now I have a 357with stock 882's, (soon to be 385with AFR 180 heads), somewhere in the 330-350hp range and go up in smoke because I only have cooper cobra 275/60's. I can only run 14.31 @98.8 when I don't even spin the tires, and hardly touching the gas for the first 150 ft to do so.

I have raced a few v8 s-10s in my old Mustang. My old Mustang was an 87 Gt Convert w/ bolt ons and exhaust it was running a 14.0 at 97 at the time that I raced these trucks.

1st S-10 that I raced was my cusins. It was a reg cab short bed box stlye S-10, he had a rebuilt and freshend up 0.030 over 305. Ported heads, mild cam, performer intake, some kinda of double pumper, headers and true duals, shift kitted Turbo 350 tranny, and 3.73 open rear end. Ran him from a 15 mph roll. Cause his truck spins too bad from a dead stop. We would stay side by side until I shifted into 3rd and he would start pullin on me a very little bit. he never went to the track though.

Another S-10 was a short bed reg cab box style as well. It had a 350 (dirt circle track motor), with Some kind of aftermarket heads, cam, aluminum intake, holley carb, full exhaust, Stock 700r4 tranny(that shifted too early), and a rear end with 2.xx gears. I raced from a roll and we stayed pretty even all the way through. He went to the track and ran a 14.2 at 96 mph.

The last S-10 that I raced was another reg cab short bed box style. He had a 350 that was 0.040 over, stock with just, alum intake, holley carb, full exhaust, it had a Camaro T-5 5 speed, and not sure what gears were in the back. But I raced him from a dead stop and I beat him by about 3 cars. up to 100 mph. He never went to the track either.

S-10s are pretty light. It doesnt take much to make them run good. The 2nd truck I raced eventually put a posi rear end with 4.10s and a built turbo 350 tranny in his truck. And said it was like night and day. He never got a chance to run it again but he said it would prolly run 12s with Slicks.

Thanks for the reply, mine is .040 over , 882 heads with 76cc chambers, with a .494 236 at .050 hyd cam, 670 carb, headers, th 350 with shift kit, 3000 stall converter, 3.73 gears with a zexel posi. It is also running like crap and bogs all the time for some reason, so I am tearing it apart after 10000km's and building a 385 stroker with AFR 180 heads. This combo has dynoed 515 lb ft torque and 464hp all in by 5000rpm. I will be running more compression than they tested with, 10.2:1 instead of 9.5:1. Looking for an 11 second run.

I watched my brothers 302HO(well built) Ranger run an S10 with a 400sbc in it. The result wasn't pretty for that S10.

Same guy had one with a 383 that ran upper 11's, but he claimed 9's. Why is questionabe since we raced on the same track. At the time it was quicker than the Ranger, but that changed with added nitrous, already being used in the S10.

That Ranger is quick and he raced several S10's, only losing to the one before adding nitrous. We knew of another that was much quicker than either, but it had real work done and by the time it was really quick, was no longer street legal or street driven. I never got to see the engine, but he claimed it was a 406.

I've raced a few S10's on the track, but never bothered on the street. Most I ran were in the mid 15's and powered by 305's. Some guys even thought they'd installed a 350... It's weird how you see that stufff and you instantly know who built their own engine by then. I remember one guy using a 350 in a Ranger. That was quick, running 12's commonly. And there are several 302 powered Rangers, many of which the owner thinks he got an HO(but didn't) and most are quite gutless. I knew one guy who used a Crown Vic engine thinking it was an HO. He couldn't figure out why his Supercab Ranger only ran 16.30's! He finally got a decent engine and managed 14's. Somehow, this satisfied him. As for me, I'm basically never satisfied! :D

Good luck with that stroker!

Where is Smokedawgs S-10 when you need it.

Smoke Dawg had a killer chebby V8 in an S-10, I think he sold it though.

Might ask him what it ran, if he ever had the chance.

i've had several friends run v-8 s-10s.some fast, some not.one was a newer style with a 305 that ran low 10s in the 1/8th.another ran high 8s with a 350.the last one ran7.30s with a 383.it had spotsman ll heads,4.56s,electric waterpump, etc.it was nowhere near streetable.theses s-10s get expensive when you need full length headers and things like that.

I just sold my V8 S-10, it was a pig, alot of them are. Most are basic ass 350 combos with bobo heads, some goofy RV cam and just a horrible setup all around. There are alot of SLOW ones around but there are fast ones too. The average one you will run into isnt too fast, there are about 20 or more around this area. There is a local one with a 383, Tremec TKO 600, Edelbrock Nitrous Kit, runs high 6's in the 1/8, there are more that run 9's in the 1/8 than anything else though.

I just sold mine, one of the worst things I bought, I played with it a little, got rid of it.

so you are saying that the lack of a roller cam costed that ranger 2 seconds. since that is the only real difference in an HO motor, i don't think something was up to par on that truck.

I wouldn't say that. First, it's hardly the only real difference. You don't simply have an HO engine by a cam swap from a standard 302. You don't gain 35hp from a cam swap alone in most cases, including that of the 302.

There is a slew of different parts used for the HO engine. Heads, cam, intake and exhaust manifolds, injectors, pulleys.... The list is HUGE! Infact, it's easier to state the parts the 2 versions share. Block, crank, rods... Little else.

I had a really bad experience with a friend's 406 S10...actually i had 400+ bad experiences with it...in the way of the HP that it whooped my ass with....lol

Then there was a guy in my old apartment complex with nearly the same engine setup in a new body S10, and it was a TOTAL sleeper, down to the stock wheels and tires, and even duel exhaust ran out the same side of the truck to look like a duel tip single exhaust. It only had a 3 inch cowl to hide the motor, but anyone can put a hood on a truck for looks. Untill you started the thing up, there was no sign of the 406 that was under the hood...it was sick.

I need to update my sig.I sold the 94 5.0 like a year ago,now i have a highly modded 91 coupe(h/c/i stroked 351),and a blown stocker 93 coupe. I beat the guy like 4 cars ahead. My mods are: novi 2000 pushing 13 lbs.,stock 55,000 original mile 302(never unbolted heads,cam,intake),4.11 gears,stock aod/lentech 3200 stall,full exhausted(l.t headers,x-pipe,borla stinger mufflers), 70mm bbk t.b. 77 pro-flow meter,upgraded fuel system. Oh by the way,you would kill 5.0 on a ****ty 305? hmmm, interesting. Was the 305 highly modded? because i would murder tpi or efi 305 back when i had my 94 5.0 STOCK. and well a 350 lt1 or tpi,i had troubles when i was stock,but when i modded my 94(h/c/i juice 5.0) it was a different story including the modded chevy's!.

i was thinking the very same when a 305 was said to beat a 5.0 ho ford. what a dog of a motor. they sucked in the camaro's, how much does an s10 weigh anyway so i can compare

I still have my S-10 and the Mustang.

The Mustang ran 11.97@115mph. That is all motor-no tune(just set fp at 40 and timing at 15), and no nitrous. I didnt get a chance to run the S-10 but I can tell that it will run circles around the Mustang. I say the truck should run high 10's, low 11's all motor. I have some big plans for the S-10 and Mustang this winter ;)

I have a buddy with an 80something s10 with a built 327. daym that thing is fast. I won't even get in it with him much less run him in the stang. I wouldn't stand a chance. Not sure what he runs in a 1/4. Doubt he's ever even taken it to the track. However, I have watched him get the front wheels a couple feet off the ground on drag radials. Insane truck.

How do you like the dart heads? Are they the pro 1's or iron eagles? I am pretty sure I will go with the AFR 180's. This combo made 471hp at 5500, and 515 tq at 4500. 433 tq at only 2500 rpm. Will be a crazy truck if I can get it all done.
