first off this is my first post, so if i mess up please help me make it right. ill learn
quickly. last fall i started a mod frenzy and im unsure if all my parts "match up" so to start here is my current list. tfs track heat intake (upper and lower), tfs tw heads 170cc, 1.6 roller rockers, tfs .499/.510 221/225 cam, 30lb injectors, walbro 255, bbk long tubes, egr delete, stock fuel rails, adjustable fpr, 90mm maf cald for 30lb inj, 65mm tb, custom tune by motorvation, fidanza flywheel. all of this on a stock bottom
end. now here is where my big problem happened. last weekend i installed my new pete jackson gear drive. drove the car from the shop where i work home afterwards without a problem. the next day i left my house to get the car dyno
tuned cause the motorvation tune was junk and before i got around the block the car shut down. i pulled it home with a tow strap using my fusion (comedy) as i pulled the front cover off i found that the cam bolt had backed out and the gear
came off and broke off the dowel that goes into the cam as well. ooo man. trying to not be late for my appt i go straight to autozone and pick up new front cover
gaskets and i hurried to install the old timing chain and sprockets. now try not to laugh at my stupidity but understand i was deperate and have no idea what i was thinking, but i took the cam dowel and pushed what was left of it back into
the hole on the cam. i then bolted everything back up as normal. this time i used locktite and torqued the hell out of the cam bolt. when i tried to start the car it didnt want to fire and when it did i heard a very metallicy popping sound. i immediately shut it off and canceled my appt. first thing i thought was that upon
start up the cam sprocket spun and went out of time, but what i dont know is if this would cause the valves to kiss the pistons. basically i dont know if the valves are able to be fully opened at tdc with my lift. because i also noticed that when i pulled my distributor, the part of the block that looks like a circle with a hole in it for the oil pump shaft was broken away. this was a pretty big piece and im sure its in my oil pan. i havnt had time to pull the engine this week, but if anybody has had this happen or maybe if you have some insight on what has happened to me i would greatly appreciate any advice. im kind of a rookie with gas engines as i am a diesel only tech. (plenty mechanically talented though) just need some knowledge on this end of things. please HELP

Sorta...I ha the cam dowel shear on me once...At about 6500ROM and 120MPH. It bent every valve. You will need to pull the motor apart. The valves are probably bent, and a broken oil pump shaft is not good. Depending on the reliefs in the pistons, you may have damaged the pistons. The bottom end bearings are going to need to be checked and probably replaced.

You probably have alot of metal floating around in the oil as well. Check the oil pump and cam /dizzy gear as well.

Sounds like its time to build a motor from scratch.

I just re read your post...Part of the block is broken away?

The part you mention holds the oil pump shaft and dizzy in place. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like a new block is also in your future.

yeah part of the block broke away. i totally dont understand it though because i cant see how that piece would be under any pressure at all. it was during deceleration at low rpm when the sprocket came undone but no tapping sound was heard then. it just shut right off, but when i put it back together is when it did it. totally sounded like valves smacking, but i was hoping maybe somebody would humor me with a fairytale idea. oo well though i figure this is a good time to drop a 347 in it. it could have been worse i guess.....coulda happened on the way home from the dyno tune. now i can wait till i have the new bottom end and
get it done all at once. what do you think about those mods though. will that cam respond well to those heads and the 347.

RIP RIP RIP sorry but you have to get a new block, a few pistons, and a complete valve job. I would suggest Craigslist for an engine. You should be able to get a complete engine for just over $500

Yeah, I agree. I would not even consider putting any time into that block other than taking it out and stripping it down.

Also, the distributor gears is turned by the cam and I guess if there's abnormal amounts of movement it can, I guess, maybe force the distributor at an odd angle and cause damage to the oil pump shaft.

Fortunately, you have access to tools and have the mechanical ability to put things back together.

Good luck and keep us posted
