Are aluminum wheels ok for street driving?

I'm about to buy a set of weld wheels, and I thought I remember reading that they're good for on the track but not meant for everyday street driving....mind you this is NJ and our roads are horrible...but don't some performance cars come with aluminum straight from the factory?

How are your roads? In MI, those wheels would get bent so easily. Our roads really really suck. There is no money to fix them. They just filled a ton of pot holes this past weekend. Those welds are a very light and soft aluminum. It wouldn't take much to bend them.

I used to have a set on my Caprice. They are nice but you have to check the lug nuts every week they tend to loosen up. Truley for a show car or the strip.

Also consider that skinnies in the front really kill your braking on a poor braking car to begin with. Most of your braking pressure 70-80 percent go to the front tires so keep that in mind considering that this is a street car.

Just a quick update.... I called the guy I was going to buy the weld wheels from, he was using them on the street and bent the one rim so they're no longer for sale. Yes it completely sucks.... but I got my answer and learned a lesson without having to be the one to suffer.

yea, considering the quality of our streets in nj like you said, it would be best to stay away from welds, every person i know who ran them bent at least one.

Ive been running draglites for the last 5 years with no issuses, and the roads here suck pretty bad. In the words of Joe Dirt "Man you gotta swerve them potholes!"

the wheels you have to be careful of are ones that say"not for street use" like bogarts, and some of the race weld wheels. Ive seen guys actucally break the rims right where the centers meet the hoop because the wheels cant handle the heat cycles from braking when you cruise around the street.

Idk man... I'd love to run them on the street but some of the potholes here really are deep. One time when it was raining I drove my stang through a puddle and the hole was so deep my back end bottomed out ....sure it sucked n pissed me off but it's funny now.

Same here. Th estreets in my city are big enough to lose your whole car in let alone bend the wheels and I've never had a problem........

wtf kind of roads are you driving on lol? our roads arent bad, but what do you live on like a 10 mile dirt driveway? im sure you'll be fine

If you dont drive like an ******* you will be fine, thousands of people dive on aluminum wheels eveyday without problems, if you have ever been to springfield ma, you would know the roads SUCK BALLS. I used to drive my car everyday with skinnes and no swaybar... no problems with handling, or braking, cause i dont drive like a retard. If i see a big pothole in the ground, i either slow down or swerve around it.

If you expect to not have to avoid potholes with any wheel, then your crazy, you can put a dent in a cobra R wheel if your not careful.
