Well my car had been sitting in the same spot for about 4 days....when i went to start it, i heard a muffled explosion(not very loud)...i tried to start it again and it started.....then i turned it off and started snooping around in the engine bay......my air filter was the only thing that showed signs of a slight explosion.(it was slightly deformed) i asked one of the local mechanics and upon inspecting every thing, he said that the slight explosion did in fact come from the inside of the air filter!!! he then said that some fumes could of gradually leaked their way in their...

But why and how????

Not unheard of. My car is a cold blooded bitch and if I punch it at all while it's still cold it will backfire through the intake. But my setup is very much non-stock, I wouldn't really expect that kind of behavior from a stock setup.
