BBK o/r X-pipe + flowmasters = Stink and TOO FREAKING LOUD

I think the stink was just the burning in of the pipes, like one of the guys posted.

MrVax was right, the unchambered Flows just didin't work for me with the BBK O/R X.

I opted to keep the X and change the muffs.

I installed 2 new (low-end) QUIET performance muffs and ditched the Flows.

Sounds just perfect now. It's a very refined sound now and the smell has passed.

Wheeew! It's nice to find a happy ending to this.

Thanks for all of your input guys. I almost ditched the X-pipe. would have been a big mistake!

TOO LOUD??!! You know there was a day when people drove around with solid lifter high duration cammed motors making 400 horsepower and side pipes... I had a 72 Nova making 450 HP with about 3 feet of 3" pipe and Flowmaster 40 series with dumps. Made the ground shake. TOdays cars have 100 pounds of insulation and choked quiet exhaust so you dont know the engine is running. And why do people want trucks to ride and feal like a car?? Im sorry.... :OT:

Not when cops arent allowed to check your cars mods Here in Texas they cant do it...only person who could get in trouble would be the shop owner, if he is COUGHT installing an O/R pipe. Otherwise we are all good(until inspection...wont pass til cats are in. And here in texas they are trained like this "we dont care if the cats are functional or not, as long as there is something that looks like a cat in each side of the exhaust" . So are you in cali or something?

Ok I have BBK o/r x pipe. I have and 2 chamber 40 series. I don't like the extreme loudness/raspiness/cackling either so what do I need to do? I have someone that will buy x pipe for 200 but would it be better to just get a different kind of muffler? If so what kinda muffler and vids please

I got cauth the 2nd week I had my o\r h-pipe installed. The cop caught me because of the smelling, not the loudness amnit:

Well, I also have 2-1/2" o/r x-Pipe with 2-1/2" flowmaster catback (40 series). I do have to say that for the first week, I could not deal with the rich fuel smell. But it has gotten a bit better since. I had O/R H and flows on my '91 and it was fine, but this is way louder!
I will agree, that it is really loud, but I like it. Only thing that I can do without is the rattle type noise that happens right around 3K RPM.

Anyone know if dyno tuning the car for air/fuel ratio corrects that rich fuel smell?

The stink, stinks. I thought it might go away, but it hasn't. The sound with my quieter muffs is just sweet. I love it. But the smell is still too much.

I hope this thread, through my experience helps some of you stang dudes. But really, the Flows on an X-pipe are obnoxiously loud. The smell is way too intense. It's a mistake for a daily driver.

My next project is to find some "lower priced" high flow cats to eat up that stink, then I'll be set and happy.

BTW, I do love the sound and the pull. But I have to be able to hear detontaion at all times. You should all consider that too.

It's a mix of all worlds... loud for some, not so loud for others and has to be a functional exhaust for particular mods.

Here's a tip. If you're not driving like a looney, 9 times out of 10 they won't care about noise.
