BBK o/r X-pipe + flowmasters = Stink and TOO FREAKING LOUD

Here's a tip. If you're not driving like a looney, 9 times out of 10 they won't care about noise.

this does not apply in cali if they really want to pull you over they will, our highway patrol are trained to look what is illegal on a car and that list on your ticket can get pretty long. I had a friend get pulled over on friday and they made him pop his hood the cop new everything was modified but he let him off with a speeding ticket... the car has a 351c.i stroked to a 436 pushing over 550HP, it has a o/r prochamber with dumps. So they know out here in Cali but it's up to the cop on what he wants to do

yup. cops here do seem to be a bit more educated and picky about things in cali. i got pulled over for driving with my damn fog lights on because they are considered parking lights!!!! WTF kinda crap is that!?!?

I heard they can really F you over in L.A. with no cats because of all the smog thats already there. like fines of $1000+...

OK why would you need to be listening for detonation? If you need to listen for it, then something is wrong or you need to back off the timing. Obviously if its timing its not helping if at times you get detonation. Also on vehicles Ive had that ever had a detonation problem I could definatelly hear and feal it. Yes the smog laws here are a pain. I drove a 81 Blazer with a 383 stroker for 5 years that every 2 years when it needed smogged I would spend a month on it to get it so it would just barely pass. I dont notice much smell from My Mustang, just when I park it and get out. Also with the Sportline springs its kinda hard to see underneath and check for cats. And with everyone and their grandmother putting Flows on their V-8 trucks, SUV's, Camaro's, etc. And the Ricer's with the Fart Cans, someone at every stoplight is a little loud.
I used to work in a small town called "Pacific Grove" near where True Blue03 is. Cops there have nothing better to do than harrass people. I got poppep for mud flaps on my truck there. The cop told me he got stopped by CHP so obviously I had to comply. There you'll get a ticket for spitting on the sidewalk.

I had the exact same setup that you describe on your car. I didn't like the smell and the noise, but I didn't want to lose the power either. I bought the magnaflow cat back and the sound is great now, but the smell is still there. It's not as bad, so I'm just going to deal with it because I like the sound and the added power with the total setup. Look around you can find some hi-flow cats at a pretty good price and that should help the smell.

Arnt you guys with the O/R midpipes worried about getting caut and paying a fine?

I'm changing out my old Borla w/wield in Dynomax Race Bullets cat-back for a "Steeda" (quieter than Stingers) Borla system - just arrived today. Hooked up to my Magnaflow O/R X-pipe, I'm hoping that I won't have to worry so much about all the police cars around here where I work.

Hahah. thats so true. i live less than a mile from P.G. You had to have driven through the small town of Carmel at least once while you worked there right??
-----> In Carmel, it is illegal to wear high heels or even eat ice cream on the sidewalk!! The cops can legally write you a ticket for it!! :rlaugh: :rlaugh: its so retarded. As i posted earlier in this thread, they pulled me over for driving with my fog lights on at 2pm in the day!! they have absolutely nothing to do with their time but harass people!!! Thats why i'm so worried now that i installed my o/r H pipe.

You made another good point tho trailblazr81...i have eibach sportlines with isolators removed in front and my car is so low, its gonna be damn hard for them to crawl under and check for cats, hell, i bottom out on 3" tall pine cones now!

that is why I love my normal borla exhaust with my x-pipe. it is perfect volume. not loud enough to piss the cops off unless you were just being stupid but it is loud enough to have anybody who like cars think it sounds wicked. perfect mix for a driver IMO.

What muffs did you go with and where from? Did it fix the cackling?

I went to a local Midas (that worked with me.. young guys, loving a S/C GT) and told them the Flows were GREAT but too loud. We found a low end performance muff with a little more baffling to cut down the sound of HELL and as it appears on the reciept was CD Turbo Mufflers.

Though I'd like to go after name brands, I can't. I never have. This works and has a great volume under "normal driving acceleration" but when you push it, it barks loud. I like this option because I can be a gas saving, regular driver with a nice hum and yet be a loud obnoxiouss ass when I need to be, or can be.

Hey, the guys even cut off the stock GT tail tips and through on some slightly bigger chrome ones that match the original slanted cut, but are jsut larger and chrome... for free!

Still, the smell is there and I know it. Anyone behind me knows it and it's not right for a daily driver with plenty of stop and go.

I've got the time now and I'm shopping for some good high flow cats at the best price I can find.

BTW, at install of the BBK o/r x-pipe, I had the guys saw my original h in the center, so I ended up with 2 pipes with cats. It makes them easier to store and a simple bracketed pipe can join them together again, if I ever need to go back to it. But I kept them. It would be a big mistake not to. To replace them, it will cost too freaking much.

you took your car into a midas with your offroad pipe on the car??? in cali, they'll rape you if you do that and turn your ass in.

:) They installed my bbk too. That's why I took it back on Saturday morning. The Flowmasters were too loud.
It depends on the guys and the timing, I guess. Great guys, who love cars. It was hush hush, bat that's all cool with me.

Sounds like you got treated real well at the Midas. But do yourself a favor. Watch those tailpipes. They probably weren't stainless steel, so they will rust from the inside out. Just be careful.

yea i never get treated well at Midas....those bastards quoted me $200 to install only rear springs on my car. and thats after i talked them down from $230 :rlaugh: :rlaugh: and they also told me it would take the entire day to install a catback...
...i just looked at them and while laughing told them that i could get new shocks, struts all 4 lowering springs installed for that much down the street as i peeled out of their parking lot.

sucks now tho with my offroad pipe because i dont want to take it into anymore shops ....even to get my saleen wing painted, prepped and installed all because im worried their gunna turn me in. i hate cali. :nonono:

I dunno about Midas Turbo Mufflers... All Turbo mufflers I have dealt with caused losses in HP. How heavy were those mufflers?? Im not worried about labor or instal costs, of all my mods and planned mods for the future the only labor Ive paid for is tire/wheel mounting and balancing, front end alignment, and gear install. Also you might want to drill little holes in the bottom of yer purty chrome tips so water cant pool and rust. And I know in places like here in Cali you gotta wax 'em every month so they dont rust.

Also about the Saleen wing install, you should be fine since most body/paint shops dont do smog checks, and they shouldnt be putting your car on a lift to see under it. If anyone asks tell em your running single chambers. and the smell is paint burning off, ie: overspray from SFC's.

I think the stink was just the burning in of the pipes, like one of the guys posted.

MrVax was right, the unchambered Flows just didin't work for me with the BBK O/R X.

I opted to keep the X and change the muffs.

I installed 2 new (low-end) QUIET performance muffs and ditched the Flows.

Sounds just perfect now. It's a very refined sound :) now and the smell has passed. :D

Wheeew! It's nice to find a happy ending to this.

Thanks for all of your input guys. I almost ditched the X-pipe. :nono: would have been a big mistake!

Glad you got your exhaust straightened out. I was gonna suggest some Magnaflow mufflers to go with that X-pipe.
I see your in the Tampa area. Have you checked out these 2 club websites?
www.thestanggang.com or www.tbmustangs.com ?

I had a bassani o/r x and regular 40 series flows and thought it wasn't loud enough.

Ditched the flows for a slp loud mouth 1. I am starting to think its not loud enough. I may run dumps this winter.

I got a BBK o/r x pipe and it was so freakin loud i had to tone it down by throwing some dynomax bullet mufflers on it where the hi flow cats would go. It sounds more civilzed without losing any power.
