Beers Of Stangnet

Well...first, my apologies for the potential length of this post. But the past few days were great...my girlfriend and I went out to Denver this past Friday and just flew back yesterday and while there we did manage to make some alcohol-related stops. :)

Saturday was the big day. First we visited the Royal Gorge and on the way back, we made a stop in the town of Canon City for some lunch and then went to the Royal Gorge Brewing Company right there in town. The name is a bit misleading now though. While they still have all the brewing equipment still setup in the front of the pub, they're no longer actually brewing beer. The owner has turned it into more of a taproom that offers beers from other local breweries as well as some big labels. So they had quite a selection and we did have a beer from one of the local breweries, Tommyknocker (more on that in a moment).

We continued on our way and about 10 minutes outside of town was the Holy Cross Abbey winery. So we stopped there to taste some of the local wines...they had about a dozen to choose from and she ended up buying a bottle of their Riesling. Most of the wines we tried were pretty good; but nothing to really write home about like my CO relatives said.

Then we left the area and decided to close out the day at the Stranahan's whiskey distillery. Even though we're not whiskey drinkers, we still took the hour-long tour to see the process and got a tasting of the whiskey. On the tour we found out they got started with some help from Flying Dog (yes, the brewery). Since we're not whiskey drinkers, the tasting was good but boy did it kick our asses. LOL.

So that was Saturday...I'll make another post for the rest...

Sunday in Denver we didn't really do much boozing. We did go up Pike's Peak which was neat, and then afterwards we met my cousin and his wife and kids at Manitou Brewing down at the base of the mountain in Manitou Springs. We only hung out long enough to munch on some appetizers and had a beer. They brewed their own beer there; my girlfriend had a Pineapple Wheat which was actually pretty good and I had their Hefe Grande, which was also good. Afterwards we went over to my cousin's place and he offered a New Belgium Trippel to me. That was pretty decent.

On Monday after we drove up Mount Evans, we came down into Idaho Springs where two microbreweries were located. First up was Westbound & Down Brewing. They seemed to specialize in IPAs and Pale Ales. We did a flight and their beers were pretty good, albeit hoppy.

After that, we took a walk down the street to Tommyknocker Brewing. They also had the brewing equipment on-site and offered a good selection. They offered 4 different types of flights and we did the "Light Flight" which consisted of their Amber Ale, Alpine Glacier Pilsner, TundraBeary Ale, and Jackwhacker Wheat (insert Beavis & Butthead laughter here). I thought they were all pretty good but the TundraBeary was heavy on the fruit flavoring thus very sweet and we didn't think we'd be able to drink a whole pint of that. We actually had the Jackwhacker at the Royal Gorge Brewing a few days prior and did like that, so we knew what we were in for there.

And that ended up being about it. I think we got our drink on a bit while visiting the High Country, along with other attractions. We closed out our trip with a concert at the legendary Red Rocks, which was incredible. Now we're back on the east coast and wishing vacation could last forever.

Sick of me yet?

Stopped by the liquor store on the way home, just to keep up the drinking trend ;) and found this:

Sunflower Pilsner by Flying Dog. It's a typical pilsner with a slightly subtle bitterness. I don't know what the hell sunflower petals are supposed to taste like so I can't comment on that part, but it's not a bad beer. Goes down smooth on a nice warm day like today, especially after I just came in from mowing the lawn.

Interesting that it says, "ale" on the label, yet they're saying it's a pilsner.

So, what was your time up Pike's Peak? :stig:

I like Scotch Ales, we have a new restaurant near her called the Highland Stag. Crooked Handle (local) Brewery made a special brew just for them called the Crooked Stag. It is EXCELLENT!! The tap handle is a whitetail deer antler. :)
Unfortunately it's only available on-site and not sold in stores. Or on TV ads.

I knew Guinness started offering a Blonde more recently, but tonight was the first I've seen of this...

Irish Wheat. Figured I'd give it a try since it's from Guinness. It's pretty good...though it seems to be missing something for a wheat yet I can't figure out what. As you can see it has a decent cloudiness to it. Overall, it's like most other wheats; I wouldn't say it stands out above any other wheat beer. Personally, I'm just glad to see more wheat beers being available. It can be tough to find them in a market seemingly flooded by "hopheads."

Founders has a new one to me.

It says it's an Imperial Malt Liquor. It's aged in a bourbon barrel, which is good to have since it tastes like booze. It's 14.2%!

It comes in a four pack, but I imagine I may be only having one this evening.

It gets better as you drink it......I can't seem to understand why:shrug::D.

Whew

Welp, it's opened. Ya gotta drink it or it'll go stale. Can't have that now, can we? :nono:

I have a new one... Boulder Beer - Shake Chocolate Porter.
Great chocolate aroma, has a nice coffee/chocolate taste to it. Reminds me of the chocolate covered coffee beans a little. NOT that strong. :nice:

Shake is delicious! About the only above average beer brewed by Boulder. If you see it on nitro, don't pass on it!
