Big block all motor 460 fox potential?

Whats the potential of a big block 460 fox? As in quater mile times, Im kinda just throwing the idea out there, currently Im on a TKO 600, full 31 spline rear, etc. so my driveline is ready for a motor. Right now Im spraying the bone stock intake to oil pan motor just for fun until the winter, then its coming out. What do you guys think?

Seen several, but dont know whats involved with the install.. I think the TKO wouldnt fit the big block...Big blocks and drag racing are a match made in heaven...Go for it!!!

Big Block swaps arent comon because they arent a swap that has a lot of a marketplace to back em up. for the time money and effort just build a mean Turbo 331. It'll be tons faster and more streetable then a big block.

^^ exactly why I decided not to build a 557 big block...sure it will give you 700+ hp...but compared to a turbo 347....the 347 will make more power, be cheaper, and weigh a **** load less...but big blocks are awesome, its something different and only a few people have em...practical?..not by any means but bad ass? Damn right

just so happens.......I built a big block fox!

the car had a Dynamic C-4, Art car convertor, with transbrake

Engine was:
heads were bought at engine systems in Georgia along with a REED custom Solid ROLLER cam. Roller rockers, hardned pushrods, BLUE THUNDER Aluminun heads, SFI flywheel, crank damp., canton oil pan, stock balenced crank, eagle rods, victor intake, with 1050 dominator built by AED (thru holcomb motorsports), and the list gets really long.

basically I installed a oil pan, motormount kit from holcomb then built a Stainless Steel Motorplate and sent the motormounts back. All this in a 1979 coupe with junkyard manual steering rack, manual brake plate, and kooks headers to the tune of $580.(these headers were 4" collectors and 3 1/2" H pipe thru 1 chamber Flowmasters with Dumps!! talk about loud!!!

the thing ran a best of 6:16 ET in the 1/8 mile on motor and 5:92 ET on a 150 shot (not much traction) (which now the irvington 1/8 mile is only 600ft instead of 660ft of normal 1/8 mile tracks)

I had a moser 9" rearend with 31 spline moser axles, FULL spool, and 4:56 rear gear. (79 ford truck brakes)

I'll try to find a couple pics and put em in this thread.

streetability.......yea if you go aluminum everything you can find on the engine and front of chassis.........3.50 gear and it would be ONE SICK SOMBEOCH on the street! I LOVED Mine but was forced to sell when the wife and I had twins!!!
fun while it lasted.......need more details email me or PM me I'll be glad to help! Would I do it again........only thing I hated about it was the fact if I wanted to work on the transmission, starter or nearly anything I had to pull the motor.........with motor plate I could pull engine in less than 45 minutes!

another vote for a turbo 331! but big blocks sound mean as hell

...y would you go 331...your gonna need a 4bolt block anyway...and blocks liek the dart can be made to a 347 and still easily and reliably handle the boost from a turbo

How about a turbo 460???

I am not an expert in the field, but most of the really fast combos are running small blocks.

A large displacment engine should be more streetable than the smaller engine with the same power numbers.

Its not a bad idea, I saw one run consistent 10.60's in Fast Ford at FFW Orlando. Nicely done car. This combo will run consistently in the 10's as a bracket car with much less radical tuning than a smallblock with a power adder.

It was common 10years ago, and seems to be coming back.

It would seem an easy way into the 9's and 10's, I think.

id build a stroker and run a blower/turbo or just build the motor to handel a hell of alot of spray.... that way when ur not on the bottle ur a more streetable car. nothin beats a mustang with a turbo, except one that has 2

a 460 engine with stock heads and a small cam can out run most 306 mustangs with nitrous......if its set up right! I wished I had my 79 coupe back! I may buy it back oneday. THe guy that bought it from me put a 460 (stock headed) with mild cam with C-6 and it runs low 7's all night long at irvington dragway.........bracket racing! it now has a 8.8 inch rear end though.........I sold off the nine inch rear years ago and went back to EFI, 302, 5 speed,and 3:73's in a 8.8 rear!

you can definatly get more power na than you can even with a turbo stroker...but it comes at a price...the highest cid you can get on a 460 is to bore and stroke it 2 660...if I was rich I would do a twin turbo 660 but those are soo expensive. THe shortblock alone was something like 10,000 ...then you need heads (blue thunder is the **** but very expensive) and all that stuff..in te end it is probably cheaper to do a turbo 347 but anyhting over 500cid+ and you can easily make 700+rwhp na with a mild set up

my buddy had a 543 on the bottle that ran low 8's in 1/4 with no traction. lol even had stock springs/struts up front.

I've seen an '84 run a 130+mph i believe with a 460...Can't remember the time

It doesn't take much to go 10-11's with a 460. You can go 12's with a bone stock 460 with a nice intake, carb, and exhaust.

So when you do a 460 swap, do ppl use the ford racing 460's or build their own? The ford racing ones seem pretty good and are only about 5800.


To the turbo comments, turbos are gay in my opinion, especially the fact that turbo cams are really small. No thanks.


To those with 460s, is it really unstreetable or is it doable? This would be something I daily drive, but not far. I already have a TKO 600, full 31 spline rear with 4.10's in the car.

Right now my plans are a nitrous 351, but I mean its still a small block, to go all motor and still be competitive would be awesome.

Just build your own. Good thing about the 429/460 series is that the stock 2 bolt block can handle 800HP, 4 bolt conversion will handle 1200. Also, you dont have to notch the cylinders for stroker clearance. And they dont really cost more than a small block, at the 600HP level, you'd need a better block.. you can use a stock 460 block. Stroker kits arent much more and a cylinder head for a small block that would support that much HP, like the AFR 225's, cost about the same as the BB heads..

Awesome info man. So you can just use a stock shortblock? What ford trucks are they found in. Because I work at a shop and I can get used engines pretty cheap, rebuilts too.
