So some of you know that over the winter I added some new go-fast goodies to my 01 cobra vert:

305ci big bore
FR500 valvetrain kit
Fox Lake stage 2 ported heads
billet oil pump gears.

After a year of research, Hensler Racing got the nod. (Columbus, Ohio)
After the build, I drove the car back from Hensler's to Detroit. It pretty much sat in the garage for 1.5 months. Now that i've put about 700 miles on the motor, i thought it was about time for a serious dyno-tune. Lidio (alternative auto) had the honors of the tuning. Now anyone that knows Lidio, knows that he does NOT tune for every last ounce of power. Rather, he tunes for power & safety. My snake's A/F is floating around 12.8 and the timing is 21-24 degrees. And for some reason, adding additional timing did not improve the power figures. It performed best around the factory settings. PS: my stock intake is killing my peak numbers. The dyno run in green is from a dyno-day at lidios last October. That was the last dyno before the big bore project. I included two of the better post big bore dyno runs. Enjoy...

Sweet! Those are the highest NA numbers I've seen anyone post for a mod motor. What are you going to do with it next?

maybe replacing the stocker intake. An FR500 intake will put me in the 400rwhp N/A catagory. I know a guy with the same setup as me, but he has an FR500 intake and he makes 422rwhp...

Holy Smokes!!!

Those are great numbers! I have an 01 vert too and I've been looking into to the FR500 Heads. I just bought the FR500 Valve Train Kit with Cams...

Is heads Foke Lake Better? I was about to order the FR500 Heads until I read your post. If you don't mind me asking, how much was it to port your heads? I wonder if porting would be cheaper and more beneficial. Did you have Fox Lake assemble your heads?

How's the idle now? is it noticebly rougher than stock? please let me know!

Intrigued.....

$1100 to port the stockers (stage 2 port with valve job). Hensler racing did the build work. It drives almost exactly like a stocker. there is very little noticable cam lope. and you have to be looking for it at that!!! i could drive the car cross country comfortably.
PS: i'm an FRPP dealer and noone can beat me on prices. Below is a note i've sent before:

Ford Racing Performance Parts:
Just letting everyone know that I’m an FRPP parts wholesaler.
If you need ANYTHING from the ford racing catalog, I can usually beat market prices by 5% to 25%.
Things to note:
• In order to keep prices low, I ship directly from FRPP. I do not personally touch your merchandise.
• Please include your zip code. (I will always provide prices w/ shipping included).
• If you run a business, I can open up a direct FRPP account for your company.
• Orders are taken over the phone only (cc#, or by certified check sent to my business address).
• Please do not respond to the thread. Please send all queries to the e-mail account below.

You are where I want to be. I don't take it to the track much but I want to increase the HP but keep it natural without killing the drivability.

Question, why didn't you go with new FR500 Heads for the same cost of porting the stockers?

I'll answer for him....forged internals. 10.5 compression tuned for pump gas. Doesn't want a blower...just a nice, torque happy motor that is reliable and can be daily driven.

Now he needs to do something about that hop, hop, hop happy IRS

Just curious, how much money did 70 more rwhp cost you. I assume it was a stock dohc 4.6 before. Heck, you could of bought a 2003 cobra, and for 2k you'd be pushing 500rwhp. I'm guessing at least 5k for the motor rebuild and frpp parts. Although, S/C 99-2001 motors is risky business, the potential for damage is high, and longevity is low. I've heard of tons of guys blowing motors in 97-01cobra's that are stock and S/C.

he has a built shortblock.
I prefer to have 360 pounds of naturally aspirated torque, that lasts longer than a s/c blown engine and not have to deal with blower whine.....

nice setup lafear01

I'm interested in total cost also. as to how comparable it is to a s/c, definately safer than a s/c application(pre 03)..so i'm guessing i'm looking for the cost of the big bore kit, forged interals, head work, valve train kit,and machine work and labor. thanks

I noticed you and 97cobra281 both said N/A is safer and lasts longer. With the proper setup and tune for both configurations how is N/A more durable and safer? The stock setup of the blown Cobra's is a very safe and durable configuration.

edit... btw awesome setup lafear01, I'm impressed. I'd love to see your car someday!!

I dont disagree that a properly tuned s/c application will last, but my consern is with problems that happen. a little trbl with a fuel system, or timing, cooling, rev limiting..etc in a s/c application usually causes more damage than a N/A application...N/A is a bit more forgiving when things go wrong. just an observation and opinion...thanks

As for n/a vs. s/c....both rely on the tune. Simple as that. Without a safe tune, nothing else really matters. You can't argue with me on this one.

I will not speak for lafear, but figure out the door cost with big bore, heads, labor, and all to be around $8K-$10K. Of course, there are variables in there.

I want the best of both worlds. I would love to add a forged bigbore on top of my S-trim blower.....BUT, I may just go with a forged short block and add a power pipe and add some timing back to my tune. Even without the bigbore, if I did that I would EASILY see 550RWHP. The bigbore would help on the low end though.

Lafear does have one bas a$$ ride now though. I think he will be able to take on some of the blown cars in our club....excluding me of course

huh, doesn't make sense to be. two cars with the config your saying at the same power would have the same sensitivity to what you've described.

that's my opinion
