I want to start on this 347 project. I might pull my old engine out on friday. I was set on porting the heads, but that puts this project way over budget and I can't swing that. I've posted a few times on what my combo will be, but here goes again: TFS heads, TFS R intake, jay allen cam, 1 3/4" longtubes, 10.5:1 compression, 75mm tb and a 80mm maf. I'd like to see around 120mph traps (or close to it) and make around 400rwhp (again, or close to it) and have really nice low end torque.

Lets say I use unported TW heads, what kinda power and track times am i looking at? I use a tremec tko and car weighs about 3250 with me.

Mike

Ditto about the heads.. I wouldn't say it'd be impossible for 120 MPH traps with those heads.. But you'll definitely need a combo that is well thought out, tuned properly, and a car that is really light.. Even if you do get 120 MPH traps I seriously doubt you'll be making 400 RWHP. But what's a HP figure anyway?? Nothing more than bragging rights..

Just like everybody else I'm not sure about the 400 RWHP but if you set the car up right you can see the 120 mph trap speeds. One of our local guys is going 11.80's at 118 with a similar combo but his motor is a 10:1 306. Altitude corrected that's like 11.30-11.40's @???mph. The only expensive gadget he runs is an Anderson PMS.

Dagger, cost varies depending how much work they do. I just got another quote back from neik erickson, he quoted me $450 and that includes shipping back to me and all documentation on the head work. This other place I emailed wanted $400 for port work and $200 for a valve job. Fox lake wants $600 for their 'stage 1' cnc program. Ed curtis said to me in another thread he got 400rwhp/375rwtq on a 347 with box stock TW heads.

If I do this 347 project, honestly, I think i'm gonna hold off on port work. It just makes the project over budget. I think I can hit near 400rwhp with the combination I have planned.

I was wondering about the 347 kits and I assume you have researched up on them,

isnt there a oil consumption problem or has this been taken care of?

can you take it to 6400-6500 RPM with out serious problems?

just wondering because I got 147k on the clock and Im not gona be driving it for 4 months and I got extra money

as for the TW heads I'm curious as well, would a Holley systemax II be a better intake for this combo? or remain true to Trickflow?

I was lookin at the AFR185's is there a real big power different between the TW heads and those? Ive heard in some cases that the TW are better heads due to the combustion chamber

Thanks for info Grn92lx.

10:1 compression can be streetable so long as the cam is. I suppose you could probaly get away with 91 octane gas but again it would have allot to do with how hot the cam is and what the rest of the tune is like. I know it's like comparing apples to oranges but I'm running 91 gas on my setup with approx. 12* of timing with no pinging issues.

Edit: my compression is somewhere between 9.2 - 9.5:1

To answer your questions (yes i've done tons of research).

No, there aren't any oil consumption issues with 347's. Any oil issue is due to bad build and/or poor machining!

6500rpm is fine since I wouldn't be shifting that high all the time, just when needed.

The TFS R intake is better for my goals and IMO a better intake for the stroker. Plus its cheaper :)

If your deciding between afr 185's or box stock TW heads on a 347, use the AFR 185's. I'd love to do afr 205's and a dart block, but my wallet doesn't allow that right now. To be honest my personal preference is trickflow stuff and I would never use anything from AFR, just my preference.

11:1 compression is fine on pump gas with an aluminum head. Mine should be somewhere between 10.5-10.8 with my 57.6cc chambers (my heads are milled .020")

I prefer Trickflow as well, Ive heard many oil consumption issues with the 347's and how they'll only last you 50 000 miles something about how its to long of a stroke and hits something (im not positive on it) but Ive heard they got kits now that will fix it,

sounds like me and you are gona have about the same combo....

what kinda cam do you plan on runnin?

I wonder about that cam on the 347 Ed worked with, did it use a R intake.

Mike why don't you like the AFR's? I can honestly say my 225's are bad ass and they were worth every penny. I have installed a lot of the 185's and never had an issue, cars runs very well also!

347's are fine, and why do people who want to run to 6500 rpms and make 400 rwhp want to get 100,000 miles out of your engine. No stroker is going to be as reliable as a factory engine, and thats the nature of the beast. Also, the oil comsumption comes from the wrist pin hole intersecting with the lower oil ring and most aftermarket pistons have this corrected. Also, the 5.4 rod is better for revving than the 5.315. As long as you properly clearanced your block then it wont hit anything regarless of the rpms. Ok, if you are building a 400 horse engine with all aftermarket parts, I hope you dont expect it to last 10 years because it aint gonna happen. So feel good if your getting 5 good years out of any stroker unless you only drive it 2-3 thousand miles a year. And to answer your first question, you will need better heads or have those ported. Ed may have gotten those numbers but he is a pro and he probably has countless hours on the dyno to get them. Dont forget that you will need upgraded springs if you want to push your engine past 5500 because the stock TF heads have springs rated for flat tappet cams and not rollers. So thats about $180 right there in new springs.

Rick, its not that I dont like afr heads, its the idiots online who know nothing constantly promoting them as if their the ONLY way to go fast that ruin it. I want to be different and go fast with a different head. I checked out a post over on corral and everyone in that thread with 331/347's was using afr 185's with a holley or an rpm 2 intake. I want to go fast and take a different path on my combo so I chose to keep my TW heads and use a TFS R. I am very partial to trickflow. I am going to check into a local guy for some head work. Ed told me he could get me 400rwhp as is, but I wouldnt make the low end torque I want. (i wanted 400rwhp AND insane low end torque) He recommended a valve job and some bowl work. As you can see, im weighing out all my options.
