Broke tranny

Ok so today at the gas station, I was on a hill trying to back up when tires spun something broke I’m sure because there was a bang and sounded as if something fell out. Shifts into all gears perfectly fine but when put into reverse it clunks and bangs and stalls. Sometimes, the shifter gets stuck in reverse and I have to try to go a bit to get it unstuck. What could I have broken and how hard do you think it’s to fix?

Unfortunately no way to tell without pulling the trans, opening it up and taking a peek.

Reverse in the t5 isn’t that strong and a few parts could have snapped internally and are now jamming up the gears.

If you don’t know your way around the inside of a t5, probably best to start looking for a replacement trans and swap it out.

Yeah I’ll pull it and look pretty sure I’m gonna need to replace it
I don't know how you feel about the DYI thing when it comes to gears, some people don't like the idea of working on transmissions. If the DYI transmission fix idea isn't something that you would rather leave to someone else, here are some resources:

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550/TKO
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://get.adobe.com/reader/

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160-$250. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs about $20, and is worth every penny of it.
There are also videos on www.youtube.com

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

On the YouTube link above, I'd highly recommend ErictheCarGuy's T5 rebuild with Paul Cangialosi. That's the best rebuild series I've ever seen. At least you can watch it and see the reverse gear assembly and see if you'd like to try it. Plus YouTube is free!

Own a Fox Body long enough and you'll rebuild your trans.

Sucks you’re having issues, hope it’s not too serious.

“Broke Tranny” is an interesting thread name though

I've done both the 3550 and the T5 multiple times. The 3550 is slightly easier, but neither is that bad. I wouldn't go buy a rebuild kit first. The kit usually doesn't include what is broken, especially in this case. If you get in there and find a bunch of stuff in included in the kit that is in lack luster shape in addition to what is broken, then buy the kit. The best place to buy T5 parts is EBAY, hands down. There are guys that make a living pulling them out of scrap yards and parting them out on EBAY. I don't remember what I bought for the last T5 I did, but it was a bunch of stuff, including the 5th gear set which costs a fortune new. Got it all done for $168 on EBAY.
