Well my trans went on Sunday (pretty sure the input shaft went as it won't go into 1st and all other gears grind when engaging and no gear will move the car) there is also a nasty clanking at idle when not moving (clutch in or out).

Anyways I need a new trans and I'm not in a huge hurry so I want to research it and buy it right the first time. Future goals for the car may include a higher compression 347 hopefully with about 550 hp. So I want a trans that won't have to be upgraded again in the future.

Anyways my choices so far are:
  • Synchronized Helical Gear G-Force T5 with hardened main shaft
  • TKO 600 from AstroPerformance (with synchros) and the upgraded Shift Lugs from ProMotion to prevent the poor shift issue
  • TKO 600 from MMR with upgraded hardened & de-burred gears rated at 900 HP

I need the trans to be pretty streetable (driven 75% on the street about 5,000 miles per year) but still handle high(er) RPM shifts (6200 now and maybe higher later on).

I have seen threads saying the TKO 600 is like butter to shift and others say its difficult to engage at higher RPM's. I have read that ProMotion sells Shift Lugs that eliminate this problem so its in the running regardless. I have also read that Tremec has fixed this problem in the latest build of the TKO 500/600

So I'm looking for choices here. I WILL NOT go Auto, so please don't start down that road. Also, not really interested in a T-56 because of cost and weight.

I believe the TKO may require a new bell housing but I am going to be getting a scatter shield anyways so that is a non-issue.

Any other suggestions are welcome, but please give reasons to back it up.

Thanks so much for your help!

my g force stands up to everything i throw at it and begs for more! plus you wont need the supporting hardware like you would for the 600. Im like you! I almost refuse to go auto as its not my style!

Impressive. I'm still worried about what happens to the GForce transmissions when people approach the 600hp rating on the trans, are they more prone to failure at that point or is this a conservative rating?

im probably making close to 600 ft lbs of torque....launching on a full 28 inch slick at 5500rpms.......i would say that is a pretty good testament to its durability.... AND A HELL OF ALOT HARDER ON THE TRANS THAN DRIVING A 600HP CAR ON THE STREET! What block are you running? If its a stock block and your making 600hp you have alot more to worry about the trans holding the power anyway:shrug:

ALL in all i guess it depends......what are you using this car for?

Well I currently don't make anywhere near that power, but might in the future. Since I already have to replace the trans, I'd like to only have to replace it once. So I'm over building now, with desire to not replace again in the future.

I intend to have a street strip car that will handle hard launches at the track. Future may hold a dart block 347 with 11:1 CR but that is a few years off still

since you are desiring a street/strip car a g force would work better for you than a proshifted 600 trans..... you want a trans with syncros so it is actually streetable!

I honestly expected worse but I guess I just blew up that one gear...

there is alot of that t5 carnage going around LOL! I do believe they have a pro shifted version the the 600! The reason im trying to steer you away from the 600 is because of all the supporting hardware you will have to buy to adapt it into your car!:nice: The g force is a direct replacement

my TKO was bought new around 2003 and has an 02 casting date on it. ive not had any issues with missing gear shifts or hard shifting. the shifter does feel a bit 'notchy', but it works fine. im still using the shifter that came in it. it was overkill when i put it behind the stock 86 motor, but i intended better engines later and didnt want to do it again then. now its behind a GT40 motor and still doing great.

There is a difference between the TKO and the TKO500/600 Is yours a TKO or a 500/600?

Modular2v, I'm replacing the bell housing & clutch either way and from what I understand the only other things that need to be replaced for a TKO are the DS Yoke and a spacer, so I do appreciate the concern, but all the expensive stuff is being replaced anyways.

The price difference between the G-force to handle 600hp and a TKO600 with all the supporting equipment is a nonissue. Do it right and do it the first time. If you are pushing that much power you will need a SFI bellhousing. If you like the gearing in the T5, the TKO500 would be closest and it also uses a 10 spline input so you can maintain your current clutch. Honestly I would go for the TKO600 because if you have gears and that much power... 1st and 2nd are going to go way too quick on the 500. The 600 spaced the gearing out more evenly. The TKO600 requires the 26 spline clutch but the stronger input bumps the rating up. You can modify your current crossmember and the only other need item is the C6 yoke. Price out the gforce on their website. After you start adding the options to really increase its capabilities, the price starts adding up. The one downside to the TKO is that its heavier than the Gforce T5.
