For mt 2002 GT, what are some cam options that i can go with?
Any good companies/site you guys know of?
Im thinking about keeping the heads stock, but using performance cams...is that a bad idea?

I plan to keep the car N/A, would like to know how much cams will help me out, and if someone can explain the lift duration thingy and what the cams do that will help. I hear they increase the redline of the car, anyone know about that too?

I'm kind of worried about emissions for NJ, because i know cams can effect emissions, but i think i can get around that if you guys would suggest some good HP cams.

Let me know, thanks

Look at VT Engines cams and Comp Cams. Most people go with either of those companys. Im planning on getting the VT Engines Stage 1 cams. If your willing to replace the springs to then you could go with the VT Engines Stage 2 cams. Youll also see pretty good gains with these cams, around 20-25rwhp on an NA GT.

Does anyone have an Install guide on how to install VT Stage 2 CAMS and Springs?

How long does the install take. And other than a cam tool, what else will I need. (Where can i even get a cam tool from?)

How much power does the Stage 1 cams add? Also, would you have to switch to 91 octane?

Get the AFM Chain Retention Tool here. http://www.andersonfordmotorsport.com/46-index

Good article in the June 2005 5.0 Magazine on how to use it. More info here http://www.stangfreak.com/

Is it easier to pull the engine to install the some cams and springs? How do you pull the engine, what needs to be removed/unbolted?

How hard is the install if you just leave the engine? What needs to be removed, to get out of the way of the installation.

How do u remove the valve covers? do you need to worry about oil leaking out? etc?

I don't know of anyone that has removed their engine just to do cams or valve springs. You can do a cam swap and springs with the motor in the car.

Well that link for Modulardepot: CAM Install Guide, had the engine pulled. So it just made me wonder.

Anyone else know the answers to the rest of my questions?

The motor is in the car. There's a couple pictures where Bill explains the concepts of chain tensioners and cam timing. If you look at the rest of the pictures, the work is done with the engine in the car.

I want to get the VT Stage 2 CAMS and Comp Stage 2 Valve springs to go with them. I would get VT springs, but i didn't see any on their web page.

This is the next modification that I want to do since it yields the most hp.

Anyone know what a stage 2 cam will do on my car?

Contact someone at VT and they will be able to give you a good estimate based on your modifications...remember you will absolutely need some sort of performance tune when you are finished!

if you get VT stage 2 cams....they recommend you having "at least 3.55 gears"....is it really necessary?

I will have 3.73s so its no prob. But I was wondering why you would need gears as well

Can anyone explain to me what cams DO exactly, and what the lift duration is and how they work. Just looking for some technical info.

ACtually I started this thread when I had my old 98GT, and wanted to trade it for a 99+ GT. NOW (a year later) I did that and have my 2002 GT. Soooo instead of making ANOTHER thread that asks the same thing, I just continued from this one and edited my 1st post to say "2002 GT" and no longer "a 99 + GT". I didn't feel a need to make a new thread when I already had one about this.

The duration of a cam is the degree's that it is opening a valve. More duration equals more flow because the valve is open longer.

The lift of a cam is how tall the lobe is and equates to how much it will open the valve. If you have more lift your valve is opening more allowing more flow. See a pattern yet.

So obviously they way a performance cam gives you more power is it increases the duration and lift allowing more flow.

I can't tell you what the optimal duration/lift is for you because I'm not a cams expert, but I bet VT could. Or some one else on the forum.
