ok i just picked up this 87 coupe.....only paid 100 bucks but still !
2.3 / t-5 ...150k

when i went to drive it home ...it runs rough ...kinda like it has a miss , had to use some starting fluid to get it started though. anyway the car is puffing a lil bit of black smoke. i bought it from a guy , his sons always drove it now his son is in prison or some stuff so he didnt know what was wrong with it.

any how here is the symptoms

runs rough
wouldnt start without starting fluid
runs very rich/can smell gas in the exhaust
studders when i get to second gear like it wants to die
black smoke in the exhaust

any suggestions or ideas ?

this forum doesn't get much traffic... be pactient!
On a car that is new to you with no histroy the best you can do is start checking everything out.
Make sure the ignition timing is a 10* with the spout out.
Make sure the fuel pressure is a 39psi with the vacume line off and drops when the line is plugged back in.
Pull the spark plugs, and see if one cylinder is way richer than another. It may have a leaky injector.
Replace the ignition components. Who knows when the last time it got new plugs was....
Look for vacume leaks. They generally won't cause black smoke, but you probably have some.

Make sure the fuel pressure regulator is ok (pull the vacuum line off the top of it and see if there is fuel in it).

Cause for black smoke is an engine running to rich, that is, too much fuel.

humm

so it almost has to be the fuel presure regulator or perhaps ?

its gonna need a tune up after having run like that anyway

It could be a leaky injector too, but I think a bad fuel pressure regulator is likely.
