I'm inclined to think it's a connector or loose wire/ground somewhere also.
Probably not going to be fun to track down.

The reality is that it would be easier to fix if it was plain old broken.

I don’t think so. I have looked over car never touch anything or install anything radio, amp, alarm . I’ll look at grounds clean them but dought it. Still won’t hurt to look. Might take 30 min of my time.

Keep in mind vibrations cause things to come loose, especially if your car is LOUD, like mine

I do have a line spark tester if that’s what ur talking about & it does spark. Unless you mean removing the connector from the starter solonid key on hold it to metal/block and crank it with screwdriver. Is that what ur referring to brother?

Open hood, start engine, turn off all lights, you have to do this at night, look for sparks jumping from plug wires around the cap, at the plugs, between the wires ect. The spark will look like when you take a screwdriver to check spark at the plug wire. Most times you can hear a snapping sound as the spark jumps to ground.

You are looking for leaks in the Lightening Hoses. You do it when it's dark out because it's easier to see the lightening when it's dark.

The thing is that you are looking for something that will cause a brief momentary complete engine shutdown (if i'm reading right).
I don't think anything fuel related would do it. I could see it running bad, but not killing the engine.
I feel like a bad coil wire or coil would either cause a miss or not work at all once hot.
You tried a new distributor and TFI that rules them out.

What i do know is that when i did my column swap to a tilt, pretty much every connector on the column was broken, loose or slightly melted. Things i never really touched. Fortunately, LMR had every pigtail, I had bought them in anticipation of the project. I didn't cut any, depinned all the new pigtails and then one by one i swapped every wire over to the new connector.
Sometimes it's not really about what you messed with, just age and heat.

I'm not saying that is your issue, but things like that could easily cause an intermittent problem. Especially the ignition switch.

I will say that I have had a situation, one time, where an in-tank fuel pump was bad [intermittently] and I [swore] it was a bad TFI. I changed three before finally dropping the tank.

Wire or plumb in a fuel pressure gauge that you can monitor during one of these outages to confirm.

Actually you have to unplug the tfi from the distributor because you need to probe the 3rd prong you will see in the instructions. Don't forget to buy a 9volt battery.

One more question of the tester. I know it tested the tfi does it test the pip as well or just tfi?

or you could get a buddy to run their fingers across the plug wires, doesn't prove anything but it's kinda fun watching them jump around

Brother I did why you said right now and I see a little bit of light flickering around spark plug #1 right where plug meets with plug. Actually around the spark plug where meets with boot. I also see a occasionall filkering and plug wire 8 it’s about 1 inch somewhere j the middle of wire. What does this mean? Is the spark plug bad in #1? Wire bad on 8?

LMR currently has a sale On Taylor wires for 86-93. Mine are cut-to-fit but but otherwise the same. No issues. I like them a lot better than the FMS wires that I replaced.
