Some of you might remember, some might not. Dad has a low 10 second all motor car. It hits the tires pretty hard on the stick, and we thought we had the parts to handle it. Sure enough it only took a few races to find the weak link. Cars still not to its potential but running good.

Last race he drop the clutch, car squatted made some bad noises and made it to about the 60' mark. Popped the cover off and this is what was inside. Brand New 4.30s looked like...

Might be time for a 9"?

It's an 8.8 with a spool. It's a set of FMS gears brand new installed by a local shop that does race builds. The car goes back Wed but my guess is the hunt for a 9" might start. Can't go breaking the car a few times a year.

Were the gears broken in or were they driven hard from the get-go?

a spool does not allow ANY differential speed between wheel.

easiest way to describe.

Having a spool is essentially having a solid axle from one wheel to the other. Both wheels have to rotate at the same rate. A differential is a rotating gear assembly that allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds while going through a turn. Spools make navigating in parking lots damn near impossible, but ensure maximum traction under launch in a high power drag racing application.

Yes a spool wont allow differing wheel speeds and acts as having a solid connection between each axle. Best set up for straight line, but terrible for street or street/strip.

The gears I don't believe were broken in. Other than driving the car up and down our street a few times, and some easy track passes it pretty much was abused from day one. Not sure why a ring gear would need to be broken in other than heat cycle concerns, but I guess when you hit them pretty hard they give faster.

I don't think a 9" is necessary but this car will be on the bottle, and having a 9" would make it simple to swap gears out and run motor then bottle.

Yeah yeah Justin, you know how we baby our cars here.

Cars already at the rear end shop... I think for the time being he's just going with the same set up. Car is getting raced at Pinks all Out in NJ, so we have to have it back soon.

We do drive them hard, but what fun is driving like an old lady?
