ive tried diffrent grounds...if it wasent grounded right it would power up?
its beand new...crutch feild even sent me a second one to try....still nonthing
factory one worked fine, played sound through all the speakers

they told me an 88 dose not have a facorty amp
They are wrong!
the radio harness has not been cut up, just unplugged from the factory radio and left there till i bought it.
Did you take the radio out and look after we told you the amp was back there?

yes the amp will make the aftermarket unit now work, it will come on, but no sound, you must take the factory amp out to get sound out to the speakers, the aftermarket unit, already has an amp in it, so the factory crap is not needed, TAKE IT OUT NOW RYAN!!!! BELIEVE US ITS THERE, WEVE DONE THIS MANY TIMES!!!!

I did away with my stock amp completely when I put an aftermarket head unit in the '89 notch. As stated, I had to buy a special wiring harness to plug into the stock harness as well as the other harness where the amp used to plug in. If the stock amp isn't back there, just find the connector that it used to utilize (small square doohickey, almost looks like it belongs on a Ford Probe or something), and plug your harness adapter into that. Again, look for the wiring harness adapter specified for "premium sound" or "premium stereo" Ford setups.

i have the radio out, i see no AMP there what so ever! its not on the floor pan behide the radio just empty spave there, there is a metal bracket there and nonthing else!
well the first thing i did was take out the factory headunit....there is no amp there just carpet and floor and a metal brace nonthing else.

If the amp's out, then you still gotta hunt for that connector that the amp used to plug into, then. If there ever was an amp there on your car, you'll find that connector back there somewhere. You'll probably have to dig around for it. Who knows, it might've gotten tucked away when you had the dash out to do the heater core...?

I parted out a wrecked 88 5.0 vert about 5 years ago, and I could have sworn the amp was under the passengers seat.

The fact that you still have the bracket sitting in there means that there WAS an amp in there, so you do, in fact, have the premium sound package that I keep yammering on about. I guarantee you, if you dig around under the dash and keep looking, you WILL find an extra connector hanging around there looking all lonely-like and begging for a mate. Buy the correct wiring harness adapter so you'll have a reference for what kind of a connector you'll be needing, and keep hunting.
Only other possibility I can think of is if someone monkey-rigged the whole friggin' car and just clipped the whole damned connector off at the end for some reason, or Frankenstein'ed the car by piecing multiple interiors together (no offense to Frankenstang, of course
), but otherwise, there SHOULD be a connector back there that you need to wire your stuff to, and that will do the trick.
As for why the stock Ford radio works and the aftermarket one doesn't ... I dunno. But again, I had the exact same problem in my '89 notch, and buying/wiring in the premium sound adapter harness was all it took to get sound through the speakers. I think that, even though you have wires going to the speakers from the other harness, you still have an open circuit somehow with the other connector that the stock amp used being disconnected, and so it shorts the setup out (hence the "pop" you get) when you turn it on.
EDIT: Why are you running a separate wire for the power and ground? Dude, the stock wiring harness has your power, ground, and constant battery right on there. You ARE using a wiring harness adapter ... aren't you?

ya i am! i orderd the harness for preimum sound it only came with 2 connecters the big black one nad big grey one!!!!!!!!!!
i cant get it to work through the factory wiring so why not run a new power wire, new ground, and new speaker wires! this why i bypass all the stock factory **** and save my self a whole lot of trouble, when i had the dash out there was NO lose wires or connectors hanging around anywhere!
i went to best buy today AGAIN and asked to see the harness for the premium sound and non premium sound..he hands me one bag that says 88 mustang harness premium sound/ non premium sound.....there hte same harness, i asked if there WAS ANY other type of amp connecters and he said let me check checked his inventory and then the computer and said NO.
so whatever piece your talking about id sure as hell like to see a picture or something!! because i am totally lost!

Ryan, first let me say I wish you all the luck possible in getting your cd player working. I pulled up crutchfields' site, put in 88 mustang convertible with 6 speakers and got this link, hope it helps you. It shows 3 plug ins for premium sound.
