Well I finally did it. ordered up a CHP 347 street fighter shortblock. put 1000 down. another 1400 to go. The motor will consist of 10.2:1 compression, AFR 185's, custom cam, trick flow track heat upper and lower, and the usual bolt on parts. looking to put some real power out of this bad boy. anyone have any guesstimates as to what kinda power I'll be seeing?

All of those parts were included in that Kit? I just blew my motor. Do they have the same thing for the 331? What about bearings and all that little stuff? Thanks!

How fast you looking to go? I would use a tfs R or holley manifold not a small track heat. Use a custom cam or an afm cam with matching valve springs. Use 30lb injectors at minimum and a 75mm tb.

What gears do you have? What are your goals? 400rwhp is cake walk if you do it right.

Use an aluminum flywheel also. Is this a 28 or a 50oz balance assmebly?

Tony - You can gain more power if you lose accessories and get an aluminum flywheel. But you will lose some driving characteristics and comfort if that is the route you choose...

Depends on how bad you want that extra tenth or not...

Sounds like you got a strong start...good luck!

Well I don't want to give up driveability, so the power steering is staying. yes the short block was the only thing I bought. The heads and supporting parts I already have from another motor I trashed. I talked to the guy who helped me out and he told me that they were going to balance the motor to my stock 50 oz flywheel and harmonic balancer. I kinda screwed up though, I thought I was going to buy their GT street fighter shortblock but instead I was charged for the kit that is right above it in price. The only difference I see in each of them is rod length. How is that a 300 dollar difference? and should I just get the 1999.99 kit instead? and Yes CUstom cam is the way I am going, the brand new F-cam is gonna be sold.

yes the upgraded valve springs are already ordered up and on their way from FTI. As well I will more in likely be going to them for my custom cam. LIke I said in my previous post I am concerned about the wrong purchase? would it be a good idea to stick with the 2299.99 dollar motor? or have my order changed out to the least expensive motor which has longer rods 5.400" compared to 5.380" or something like that? I am gonna talk to the tech guy again monday morning.

Tony, the rod length doesn't matter. I use the 5.315" rod ONLY because the 5.4" rod I wanted was on back order. I MUCH prefer the 5.4" stuff. I use probe ultralight I beam rods with arp 7/16" cap screws. Its a light weight high rpm n/a rod.

You should have ordered your cam first then let FTI pick the proper valve spring to work. I'm on my 2nd FTI cam and my 2nd set of FTI valve springs. My first set of springs would definatly not be able to keep up with my current camshaft. Its a healthy bumpstick for sure

The only difference I see between the street fighter and the street fighter gt is the rod length. I don't know why theres a price difference.

I would have it balanced to 28 oz.

Fwiw with a 0 deck block, 58cc head, and the probe flat tops with a .039" gasket you have more than 10.2:1 compression. It'll be around 10.5-10.7:1.

man. well maybe FTI could work with me and I could send back the springs since I still haven't even recieved them or used them... you really think 28 oz is better? I was just looking at costs. if I got it balanced to 28oz that mean s I am going to have to change out the balancer as well as the flywheel. but I guess if I go all out I might as well do it right. sooo the rod lengths don't matter? I was just going to keep it the way it is. how much did you end up spending on your flywheel and balancer??? thanks for you help Grn.

I don't know if the block is going to be 0 decked though. The guy didn't say it was going to be, I am going to give him a call tomorrow and question him some more on it.

The rod length does effect things slightly tony. That is why they offer two different ones If there was no difference at all they wouldn't offer two different rod lengths. Business don't run like that.

No problem dude, I don't mind helping.

If its balanced to 28oz you'll need a new balancer and flywheel. Rod length doesnt matter if its built/machined correctly. Only slight difference the rod length will make is the camshaft timing events will need to be tailored differently. You're getting a custom cam so tell the grinder what rod you use.

I paid $320 for my SFI fidanza alum fly and $250 for my light weight romac balancer. You can get the flywheel cheaper on ebay but I don't do ebay. Like you said, if you're gonna do it, do it right. I was originally gonna balance it to 50oz then I thought to myself WTF am I doing? My builder (Rick 91GT on here) ended up calling me to tell me the rods I wanted were on backorder so while I had him on the phone I told him to have it balanced to 28oz.

You need anymore help, just ask and i'll do my best.

Mike

I would go 28oz personally, going 50oz takes a lot of material out of the crank.....

The difference is rod length is nothing IMO, built right both will live for a long time and make a lot of power. The 5.315" rod is for guys who are too carried up in the internet hear say of "347 oil burning myths"..lol

Well I am going to call my sales guy again who's been helping me out and have him change the plan. He did mention that it would be time consuming and alot of metal would be removed. Lastnight I decided to just have it balanced to 28oz then today he told me it would be ok to keep it at 50 oz. But shyt this is just driving me nuts. I guess I'll have him balance it for sure 28oz and stick with my game plan. HEck I just got a call that some funds came in now I can go all out!!! sweet! As for the oil consumption myth? I have heard many crazy stories as well, and I figured it didn't matter. I am sticking to my guns and (hopefully) not look back. My buddy told me about Brothers performance which is selling a billet 28 oz flywheel for $120 and Mustang unlimited? selling a balancer for 160. I also decided to ante up for some long tubes. I'll probably be getting BBK 1 3/4"

Stick with a fidanza aluminum flywheel and buy a good balancer. I like the light weight romac balancer.

How high you looking to shift?

Dude, the balancing does not matter much, as Rick said it is just a little more matarial taken out from the crank. I stuck with 50oz on mine and there are only a total of 4 holes in the crank when they did the balance job two on each side. Leave it at 50oz you will be fine and don't waste your money getting a new flywheel and balancer iof you already have the 50oz stuff. Just my opinion. Your 302 stock was 50oz and always has been so keep it that way.

Here is a good article about the effect of rod length.
