Besides the engine, transmission, and rear end.

What would it cost(just a estimate) to convert a 6 cylinder to safely handle a 500hp engine over a car that already has a v8 in it?

btw this will be for a 69-70 stang

thanks for the help guys,
mike

p.s. i did do a search, but didn't find what i was looking for.

As much as you'd care to spend.

 That's so true!

I'm converting mine right now, but I also have much body work to take care of and lots of knick-knack items like door handles, mirrors, rear lights, blah blah... I'm nearing $6k minus the motor and tranny which I already have.

Are you also talking brakes? If I were to have a 500 HP motor in my car I'd want the best brakes available. Being that it's a 69/70, I don't know what's available for it except Baer, SSBC, and Wilwood and for those you're going to pay between $600 and $1500.

You're going to need springs, shocks, spindles, hubs, inner and outer tie rods, new center link, pitman and idler arms, heavier sway bar, motor mounts, bigger radiator, V8 engine harness. Those are things I needed for a 68 and a 66 conversion.

If you are really going to have a motor making 500fwhp . . . I would assume that you are going to be using a 9.5 deck height motor or a 8.2 sportsman/mexican/R/A whatever. You might as well get the 6 cylinder car as you would be tossing out everything in the v-8 car anyways.

You are past the point of living on any stock c-4.

You are past the point of living on an 8-inch.

You are riding on borrowed time in a stock block 302.

With either car, you are going to replace most everything.

I agree with 57 fairlane. That is the path I have already taken with my 67 fastback. I also acquired a 6 cyl. 69 fastback for $800 to do the same. I really can't see cutting up a valuable car. The way I see it, once a car goes under the knife for heavy mods, it become equal to any other car with the same mods. which were done. Just my opinion

ok guys you pretty much backed up what i was thinking about everything.

brakes: i was already planning on a 4 wheel disc brake conversion.

going with EFI. So, a custom harness would be used anyways

suspension: was gonna be done before i put the higher hp engine in there.

transmission: was gonna go with a t-56 viper spec(just to be different hehe)

Rear end: was gonna build up a 8.8 or a 9 inch....whichever i got a better deal on.

So, yeah. thanks again guys

Really depends on if you buy kits or scrounge the wrecking yards

With the 6 cylinder still under the hood, I'm at ~$15K just in upgrades (not including the price of the car). I figure another $15K in building the engine, fuel system, cooling system, exhaust system, electrical system, new chassis springs and engine mounting hardware.

Frankly it's cheaper to buy one someone else has done, if you don't mind it not being 100% exactly what you want. If you have the up front money, you buy an all ready done car, drive it a few years, then do the little things that make it the way you want.

Hey has anyone got any info on what parts are the bare minimum requirment for this conversion?

I'm look at a cheap 3.8 powered whip right now for a shell.

Links?
Pictures?
Anything? :D

Help a brother out, I'm a v8 guy but this v6 is in amazing shape!

Actually 69-70 is probably the best year to do this conversion with. I have a 1970 coupe I converted from a 250ci 6Cyl to a 302 V8, the nice thing about the 69-70 is they finally started to standadize the parts in the cars. So no need to upgrade brakes or rear-end, the 8-inch rear is plenty unless you are going to pour alot of HP into it.

I only had to buy the new engine mounts which were about 100.00 that's pretty much it. The wiring harness for the alternator doesn't have to be changed you will have to modify the throttle cable because with the V8 it is closer to the driver so the cable is too long. I also upgrade my Radiator.

Engine Mounts - 100.00
Modify Throttle Cable - 3.00
New Radiator - 200.00
