Hey guys, awhie back most of you might remember the '5.0 Mustang & Superfords' issue March 2006 with the black foxbody on the cover. I just thought it was pretty interesting how he has a distributorless system on his car. I scanned the one page where you can see a little bit about it. Unfortunatley, they don't talk too much about how he did it, but they did mention he was using an 99' EEC V w/ custom programming. I don't know how relevant it is towards Fords, but my friend has a 94 Trans AM with an LT1 in it that I helped him convert over to a coilpack system. He did it using some parts from a cadillac. It was pretty interesting how much it affected the ride, we both noticed it seemed a lot smoother and overall better feeling. Anyway, I imagine it could get pretty hard with ford's programming and such. I know MSD offers a distributorless system for $$$ I was reading about. Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting topic and figured I'd start a thread about it and maybee hear some of your guys thoughts on it. I wonder if any of the 5.0s in the explorers or anything used coilpacks?

Anyway here's the link to the page I scanned. Click 'save as' to save it, and then reopen it so you can read it, explorer will resize it.

It seems to me that some flavor of Explorers did have coil packs, but I also dont know if that only came about with EEC-V.

I thought one of the fox guys on here was going to or actually did that. It's been some time back though (swapping to a dizzy from coil packs is the more normal swap. I can understand your friend ditching the Opti though).

Is it me, or is the only part that actually looks like it's from an Explorer the Camshaft Positioning sensor? The rest of it looks aftermarket being Coil-on-plug and all. I would think just running an entire GT40P setup and finding a place to mount coil-packs would be a lot more affordable.
