Don't do it--use an escrow service or, the more obvious solution--have his bank wire you the money directly. Talk to your bank first so that they give you the routing codes etc. Or have him send it Western Union, where he has to give them cash, or if the check is bad, it's their problem.
They can produce good fakes of any check, and your bank won't know until months later sometimes.

you're wrong. it is a scam. anytime anyone asks you to send the remainder of a balance along with the goods it's a scam. The check will clear and then a week or two after you've sent the engine and the remainder, the check will get refused and you'll have a negative balance in your account.
